I play a Mapex Pro M kit with Zildjian A Custom cymbals and a Mapex Black Panther snare.
I actually bought the snare for around $400 when it first came out and I figured that it was probably worth more than the rest of my drumset at the time. I'm glad I bought it though. I plan to play this one for decades to come while the rest of the set will probably change several times.
I was "this close" to buying a set of DW's from Music Go Round last year. I still regret it. They had a orange sparkle bass drum, two mounted toms, and two floor toms for ~$2k iirc.

I've got a pearl Export select Jazz series (floor tom mounted to a stand). Its been a pretty nice set, and its also my first and I didn't have any experience whatsoever before I bought it.
I bought a Sabian cymbal pack (16" crash, hi hats, and ride) that actually don't sound to bad to me, but I definitely think I could get much better hi hats. Bought a Zylgan 18" crash that sounds hot, and a Sabian splash just for fun.
bought a Pearl Powershifter double bass pedal that has been doing me alright. tons of fun with that thing.
I've been playing a whole lot more now and think I need to do some upgrades. Sometime I definitely would like to get some new heads as mine are factory and sound like butt, but I don't know anything about it and would have no idea how to tune them. Could probably use a nice hi hat stand as well, like one with only 2 legs to make it easier for the double bass. 10/8/2007 2:36:48 PM |

K Custom = the tits
I play a Tama rockstar custom, aquarian performance II heads on top and single ply aquarians on the bottom. I think I'm going to go with remo pinstripes next, or powder coated. I just want something different.
I've got an Iron Cobra double pedal that is a waste because I don't use a double pedal. I'd like to trade it for a nice DW single, but oh well. 10/10/2007 12:12:36 AM |

Bottom heads...How often do y'all replace them? Seems like a waste to do them every time you replace the top heads, but the drums do seem to play a lot better when I change them. I don't know if that's because I put more effort into tuning them or if they really make that much difference. What are y'all's thoughts?
^ I've got a set of Avedis hats that I only used for like a year. I think I talked to you about them once though. I'd let them go for $175, but I'm just going to hold them otherwise. They're too nice to give up cheap. I paid around $275 for them at Guitar Center. It's a New Beat top hat and a Mastersound bottom.

^ to answer your question about bottom heads, typically these only require changing every 12 months or so...mainly, if you tune the bottom head so that it resonates at the same frequency as the top head, you will get the purest sound out of the drum.
Obviously, the bottom head does not experience use like the top head, so if you just spend time and make sure to tune them properly when you tune your top heads, they will sound just fine for a long time.
Personally, I spend money on top head replacements muuuuuuuuch more often than I do for bottom head replacements.
As a tip for tuning (any heads, really), put the drumsticks away. Tighten all of the lugs from loose to "finger" tight. Then go around on direct opposite lugs tuning, using the tip of your finger to around the drum to hear pitch. This is really helpful in trying to hear the true tone of the head when you are tuning, rather than simply beating it with a stick. Rotating tuning the head on opposite lugs sides also helps make sure that the head stays in balanced tension throughout.
Hope this helps, happy drumming! 10/25/2007 7:51:38 PM |

^^Yeah, you may have. Do you have any pictures? I'm not sure, but aren't the mastersound bottom hats the ones with the ridges on the edge? I'm not sure about those, I like the clean "chick" sound, but I am certainly interested.
Also, anyone have a nice throne they want to part with? 10/25/2007 9:31:37 PM |

I've got to work on my stick work. I've never played a marching snare like the ones in the first two links. How do they differ from a snare that you might play with a trap set? It sounds like they have the heads tuned super tight? 10/30/2007 11:22:58 PM |

A few thoughts:
1. I'm SO glad that Ludwig went back to the old logo--I never liked that '70s-looking one.
2. I sold my DW kit a few years ago--so for now I'm kit-less.
3. For my ride cymbal, I prefer the 22" A Custom Ping Ride. It has a nice crystalline sound but plenty of power when needed.
4. Thrones: I've used Roc-N-Soc for years and they've never let me down--literally.

But Pork Pie has some killer-looking ones, too.
http://www.porkpiedrums.com/products/thrones/index.htm
5. I think all drummers should be reading Modern Drummer and/or Drum! magazine(s). They both have lots of informative and entertaining stuff.

I have this kit too, though it's the Fusion series...pretty satisfied with the shells, use Evans G2 coated heads. Kick drum sounds AMAZING...my cymbals are in need of some upgrading though, I'm using Zildjian ZBT all around and I outgrew their sound loooong ago. I also need another hi-hat stand that is compatible with double bass, and a new double pedal as well. Mine's falling apart

I play a "fusion" kit too. 22" bass drum puts out a lot of sound and the 10"/12"/14" toms are a good combo in my opinion. I would like to add a 16" floor tom for a more complete sound. 11/14/2007 2:32:56 PM |

Quick question about double bass pedals..
I'm a left handed drummer and was wondering if your standard double bass pedal can be adjusted (pedals switched sides) to play left handed? I know there's some specifically "left double bass pedals" out there, but I've only found like 3 in existence.
Anybody have any information on this? Help would be appreciated. Thanks! 11/21/2007 9:16:58 PM |

I thought most left-handed drummers still set up the same way
like guitars too
I mean I had to train my hands and legs to play drums, not like I was born with right-handed rhythm...I know this isn't any help to you, but I'm just curious as to why you didn't set your kit up normally when you first started playing 11/22/2007 10:00:15 PM |

??^ hmm define 'normal'...
don't really know what you're asking. I mean it just came natural for me to play with my left hand on the hi-hat crossed over my right hand on the snare. i play with my left foot. never really had a problem with it. 11/22/2007 10:30:31 PM |
paerabol All American 17118 Posts user info edit post |
well right, it's not a problem until you try to buy gear for an industry dominated by a right-handed MO
don't get me wrong, I'm not faulting you for playing your kit mirrored from the norm...I'm just curious as to why you started playing that way. I know left-handed people that still play right-hat and left-snare, because when you first start playing and have no experience, it's just as easy to start that way. In other words, I could have initially set up left-handed and learned to play just as well even though I'm right-handed...again, just curious. good luck in finding a lefty db pedal! 11/22/2007 10:53:53 PM |
Ronny All American 30652 Posts user info edit post |
My buddy is a lefty and plays a mirrored set. He's got a Tama Iron Cobra dbl pedal made for lefties. I'm not sure if you can switch a right dbl bass pedal to use as a lefty, but I doubt it. 11/23/2007 3:44:28 PM |

On a side note, I just got a GNARLY set of Pearl tenors.
Just like that, but silver sparkle.
I don't know what I'm going to do with them yet, save try and recover some of my marching chops from HS.

If you can play real drums even half way decently you will own at Rock Band. I tried it out on Medium and actually had a hard time because it dumbs down the real beat for you and I was trying to play what I actually heard, which was way more than the number of beats I was being given to play. If you can play the drums, you need to go ahead and start off on hard or expert. Otherwise you'll just get frustrated. Also it takes some getting used to that your hi hat can turn into a tom on the fly
I'm waiting until we move in a few years to get a new set. I don't have any space in our house right now and don't really have the time to invest in playing. Hopefully in a few years that will change and I can get a set again and start playing more often. Until then I'll just look at this thread and be jealous. 1/14/2008 10:22:10 AM |

I should really learn more about heads. I have bought all different kinds of heads, but I'm usually replacing totally dead ones with brand new ones so they are going to sound great regardless. I'm not a big fan of hydraulics on my set, but other than that I don't pay much attention to them.
I've been rocking Evans G1s on my Toms for a while. Powerstroke 3/4 on the bass drum. Normally Remo Pinstripes on the snare, but I think I have a coated G1 on there right now. 1/21/2008 4:03:48 PM |

i used to play Evans G1 heads but made the switch to Remo Ambassadors a few years ago...
when I got my CX DW Set it came with DW's new Remo Clear/Coated heads. i must say, they are the best heads that I've ever had. unfortunately, my 12" head popped when we were on the road over the weekend ( i think it was a combination of hard hitting after being out in the cold).
here's a pic:
they have the nice soft feel of the clear and the coated ring. AMAZING heads. highly recommend them 1/21/2008 9:23:06 PM |
