Has anyone used windows one care? It protects, cleans up, and tunes up your PC. I don't know if I want microsoft looking thru my computer. It seems kinda invasive. 10/7/2007 12:18:30 PM |

its the 3rd best thing behind symantec and kaspersky, in terms of buying a license. if you like free software that is great get avg. otherwise, i'd stick with it unless you can legally get the free symantec from ncsu.

if you are saying the symantec corporate edition is annoying your judgment on av software is null and void. 10/7/2007 2:42:14 PM |

i dont understand the SAV from ncsu...there's nothing preventing non-students from using it except needing the exact link after logging in with unityid. 10/7/2007 10:53:46 PM |

Onecare is a terrible anti-virus. 10/8/2007 10:07:03 AM |

i liked it when i had it. the only thing that i did not like about was that it seemed to be a resource hog somewhat, but that is probably changed by now. also, because it doesn't have anti-spamware built it may turn off some people. i would at the very least say it 3.5/5, and its not bad, per se, but it has room for improvement. 10/8/2007 10:15:55 AM |

when put ot the test, onecare doesn't stack up against other, well known, anti-viruses.
you probably didn't experience the products short-comings because you practice good browsing habits. 10/8/2007 10:35:10 AM |

yeah this could be true, but from what i have read it seems to stack up against them, but not in a literal sense, but in a sense that is it effective, user friendly, and a good cost for 3 machines. but yeah, if you practice good browsing habits you probably will not see the short-comings of such a program. 10/8/2007 10:39:46 AM |

The consensus I've seen among review sites is:
Easy to use but misses things that are inexcusable to miss (ie. availible on free public virus lists.) The only glowingly positive things I've heard about it come from Microsoft insider blogs and fanboi sites.
If you've had problems with SAV corperate before (most likely from installing over a norton trial) then by all means- use one care. Also, if you're worried about keeping track of whether it's actually still working or not, onecare is probably an alright option. Since slightly under half of those who think they have current and running anti-virus software are incorrect, something that is almost insulting about reminding you when it's broken might be a good idea. I've installed on several machines over the summer, as we tried to push it as our main AV product.
I saw time and time again, where onecare would
A. not even allow an install due to insufficient RAM. B. not able to come close to cleaning an already infected system. C. force registration/hotmail account
Windows defender is great at keeping a clean system clean, but terrible at doing the cleaning. while we regularly use several anti-spyware scans to verify a systems cleanliness, onecare seemed to leave so much more than average behind for spybot/adaware to pick up. 10/8/2007 10:49:55 AM |

for AV - NOD32 & Kaspersky
i used OneCare since beginning of beta 1 and some during the beginning of perpetual beta
VERY easy to use in terms of set it & forget it. i loved the integrated backup along with the AIO security and seemed very responsive.
but as GraniteBalls has pointed out the AV is virtually useless... 10/10/2007 2:06:26 PM |

I never tested the backup utility, but i remember hearing that it was a nice and fleshed out version of ntbackup. 10/10/2007 2:36:48 PM |
