I got my car towed last saturday night from ivy chase.
I think there is a total of 6 visitor parking spaces. All were taken when I arrived. The reason I stopped there was because I recently had surgery on my ankle - the wound had become infected, dripping blood and not clotting. I did not want to drive to north raleigh where I live to wrap the wound so I stopped at my friend's house in Ivy Chase. There were no visitor spots available - aside from that fact I cannot walk very far due to my ankle. I parked outside my friend's apartment, wrapped my wound, and raised it above my head for the swelling to go down - staying at the apartment for a few hours. When I felt I was ready to leave my car was towed - costing me 100$.
The guy at the towing company said Ivy Chase might give me my money back if I argue this. I have not been over there yet, but will this get my money back? or am I screwed.
Could this go to Better Business Bureau?
Also - I have a handicap permit for NCSU. I do not have a handicap permit for public - but I do qualify. 10/9/2007 2:26:29 PM |

none of what you said matters
you were parked illegally (i.e. without a permit), and you got towed.
end of story.
if someone's feeling especially generous and sympathetic in the office, they might give you your money back. but in no way are they obligated to do so. 10/9/2007 2:28:30 PM |

probably should have gone ahead and gotten the handicap permit for public - you parked illegally and were towed - you didn't expect the towing company to know your story before they towed you - likewise you aren't even a paying customer at ivy chase so I can't imagine they would take sympathy and give $100 away to anyone with a story that could have been made up 10/9/2007 2:31:49 PM |

I'm pretty sure most apartment complexes have properly posted signs. sounds like you were in the wrong, and are just going to have to suck it up.
of course, it can't hurt to ask the apartment complex, but i can tell you what they are going to say. 10/9/2007 2:39:48 PM |

proof of what? that you were parked legally? your ankle doesn't matter (unless you can use it to elicit sympathy from ivy chase, which is doubtful imo since the towing company has your money, not ivy chase.)]10/9/2007 2:39:56 PM |

When I lived there, it was Thistledown, but I made a copy of my parking sticker, and taped it to my girlfriends windshield. Never had to worry about it. Parking sucked back then, I guess it hasn't goten any better since. 10/9/2007 2:58:35 PM |

Yeah because clearly ankle scars give you a free pass from having to follow parking laws, and makes it ok for you to screw some paying resident of Ivy Chase that now has nowhere to park in his own damn apartment complex.
If you think you've even got a shread of a chance of getting your money back you're crazy, and if you do somehow get it back, there is no justice in the world.10/9/2007 3:03:34 PM |

Except for Ivy Chase CLEARLY has signs CLEARLY posted Warning that ANYone without a permit will be towed unless parked in a guest space. Under the specific warning the sign LISTS the name of the towing company AND A PHONE NUMBEr at which they can be reached. Guests that park in random spaces are interfering with residences ability to find a parking spot very unlike the closed foodlion that had over 100 empty spaces.
I hope your simple mind can see the difference between the two situations.
That sucks though Larry but i thought you would no better then to park at ivy chase. I am sure the complex might work with you given the situation.
Ivy Chase has the worst fucking towing policies. They are absolute nazi's and make it extremely difficult for anyone to have guests over. When friends of mine are looking for apt complexes i always discourage friends from living at Ivy Chase.

when i lived at ivy chase i couldnt find a parking spot when i came home one night
there were multiple parties going on and there were ZERO spots available anywhere on the property
i called the towing company and they said the management office had to call them in order for them to come out
so i spent the night somewhere else & went into the office on the next business day asking for 1 day of rent back.
i argued that i was unable to stay in the apartment i pay for because they were not enforcing their towing policy then asked for 1 day of rent to be prorated to my account. they tried to tell me no but i persisted and they agreed. it wasn't so much about the money as it was ab the principle of the matter.
it was a small victory since ivy chase was an overall terrible living arrangement 10/9/2007 7:18:32 PM |

Bottom line is it's $100 bucks. Just go and try to get it back, worst case you leave without the money, but there's still the chace (even if it's small) that you'll get it back. $100 buys a lot beer. 10/9/2007 10:56:12 PM |

That is definately true. They towed our own car out of Gorman Crossings because they "didn't see the sticker", took over an hour to get to the lot, and refused to give us our car without paying, even after we showed the sticker. Of course, Gorman Crossings didn't do shit about it either. "They have no control over the towing company" I would have fought it except my fiance was already late to work due to their stupid asses and we couldn't wait any longer to get the car back.10/10/2007 9:25:56 AM |

This is such bullshit and maybe IvyChase should cut down some trees for more parking. We all know that no one living there has parents/girlfriends/boyfriends/friends/etc that come and visit. I always try to dissuade people from living there the place sucks and it is overpriced at $600 per month for a 3 person apt.10/10/2007 9:47:02 AM |
WolfpckGrl17 All American 5755 Posts user info edit post |
^ It's not quite $600. I have been there 3 years (it's convenient to my job in RTP and nice for what I need right now) and I only pay $413.33 a month for a 3-bedroom! So although I typically agree with you, I wouldn't say it's overpriced, IMHO really.
But yeah, the parking does suck. Over the past 3 years, I have seen a lot of changes--good and bad. At one point one year, they weren't even towing at all. I could have company over and it wouldn't matter at ALL. But now they are horrible. And that's why they have removed ALL but like 10-12 spots total for guests. Supposedly, they are building a parking deck for residents, but I doubt that will happen. They need to do something though in that HUGE pit they have right behind my building, instead of leaving tall ass trees there wasting space.
According to my coworker who lives out there too, they are towing illegally. They are leaving cars out with no permits but are towing ones that are parking on the curb who are RESIDENTS with NO where to park. What sense does that make?!?!?! He said, you can just jump into a car while they are attempting to tow you and they have to "legally" drop it for free. Either way, it's a mess that needs to be resolved. My homeboy works in the office and he's doing everything he can, but ish is ridiculous. 10/10/2007 11:56:47 AM |
HUR All American 17732 Posts user info edit post |
i wouldn't even say ivy chase is that convenient to RTP. From that location you have to deal with the I40 US1 bottleneck every morning at exit 293.
My location at lake johnson mews is pretty clutch because i can hop onto the inner beltline from kaplan take the exit 4 wade ave. exit, at this point wade ave. is a freeway that converges with I40 at exit 289. Unless the fair is going on or some dumbass causes a wreck I almost never deal with AM rush hour traffic.
One of my friends was being shady while visiting a friend at IVY Chase and went up onto the curve via the car care place and drove through the grass to park behind his friends building. Somehow the tow guy managed to find him there too.

I do believe it is illegal to ride in a towed vehicle. I saw some girl's car there get hooked up to the tow truck and hearing the driver say she had to pay $50 for 'connection fee' or $100 from the tow lot. Thinking about it, if I were in that situation where I had a permit and legitimately had nowhere to park, I'd hop in the vehicle, tow-truck be damned. Let them call the cops, without some sort of illegal entry I doubt they could do anything but sit there and play the waiting game with you, wasting more time and effort for them than prowling on someone else's car.
If you really wanted to get your $100 back, with no other way of actually getting the money, I always thought it'd be proper if someone 'accidentally' caused a couple hundred bucks worth of damage to the property or tow-truck. Tow-truck would probably be harder, not to mention they usually have another vehicle with them as an escort/backup.

True HUR. I guess I just consider it convenient b/c it's RIGHT off 40 and it's not far from my hometown either. It's in a good location. But anyway, yeah that "bottleneck" area from exit 293 all the way to Wade is a BITCH! I hate it. So yeah, sometimes I go down Gorman to Wade and take that to 40W where it turns into it. It can be quicker.
Back to the matter at hand though, towing out here is ridiculous. They are out here now, as I can hear the truck passing my window. Grrrrr. 10/11/2007 1:13:49 AM |
