yes, but you don't need to be a PE at all to be an engineer

and ChemEs really don't have to take it or the PE in order to "put our name on work"

it's always been presented as optional

basically all i have heard the PE is for government stuff or pay increase or fancy letters to put after your name.

Never said you needed it. It's a weak comparison sure, and not made with seriousness (hence the weak qualifier.

Oh yeah, and it was a simile. Calling it an analogy does a disservice to analogies everywhere. It doesn't deserve that extra syllable.
