is concerning itself with something called the State Children's Health Insurance Program? Call me stupid, but if it's a plan for the states, then shouldn't it be UP TO INDIVIDUAL STATES to decide on and pay for it? AKA, if people in wyoming say "fuck it, we don't want a health insurance plan for kids in our state," shouldn't they be able to say so on their own without affecting the rest of the nation?
There are plenty of excellent reasons to oppose SCHIP, much less an expansion of it, but this reason alone seems to be quite compelling in its own right...

let's see... interstate highways... interstate commerce... hmmmm... that and the fact that the highways were also, allegedly, suppose to aid in the gov'ts defense of the nation... really not applicable to my point. 10/18/2007 7:15:33 PM |

the answer to your question is that we pretty much do what we want to do, regardless of whether or not it's Constitutional.
i mean, we might as well just get it over with and repeal the 10th Amendment. 10/19/2007 12:35:44 AM |

couldn't be more obvious, you really need it 'splained further? Federal money means Federal gov't involvement. If a state doesn't want Federal involvement, then they simply refuse the Federal money10/19/2007 10:19:10 AM |

so, you think it's a good idea for a state who doesn't like the program to be forced to pay for it anyway? man... 10/19/2007 7:04:05 PM |

i suppose a state could cutback/eliminate the program and then pay more for child healthcare via unpaid ER visits
yup, probably what will happen since the US seems incapable of looking down the road / practicing prevention on nearly any topic 10/19/2007 9:41:42 PM |

you don't get it, do you? The state never touches the money that it's CITIZENS PAY TO THE FEDERAL GOV'T in taxes. There is no "cutting back in the program and using the money elsewhere." If the citizens of a state don't like SCHIP, too bad, they have to pay for it anyway. And if a state decided not to accept the SCHIP money, then its citizens just got fleeced. 10/19/2007 10:38:29 PM |

Quote : | "States facing inadequate federal SCHIP funds will either have to increase their own state funding to make up for the shortfalls (which, in turn, will generally force them to raise taxes or cut other programs) or cut back their SCHIP programs by reducing eligibility, capping enrollment, eliminating benefits, increasing beneficiary cost-sharing, or cutting provider payments. In states that cut back their programs, substantial numbers of low-income children could lose health coverage" |
does it really have to be this difficult?
Yes, the citizens have to pay federal taxes that go to the federal government (and state taxes, which, oddly enough, go to the state government) - you don't get to pick and choose which programs you'll fund, you pay your taxes into the pool (state or fed) and then they are completely wasted or misappropriated by all the greedy bastards out there (state or fed, or for that matter local and private). Why would a state not want to accept the federal funding, or why wouldn't they want to take part in the program? all those 'better' ideas they have or more important projects (new national helium reserve for the dirigible fleet? honeybees for the wax reserve?)10/20/2007 2:27:34 AM |

And I ask why a state should have to pay for a federal program they don't like when what the program is is a matter that belongs to the state per the Constitution/10th amendment ANYWAY.10/20/2007 8:34:21 PM |
