Trust me, I have a 04 Ninja 500r, which pretty much meets the requirements of "little starter bike", and I definitely would not even consider riding across the country on it. You haven't though this out very well have you? 10/23/2007 6:21:50 AM |

there's not reason why a minty or at well-maintained older ex500/ ninja would not make it across the country and back.
but if i were graham i sould defenitely ride around town and get some experience forat least a couple months to a yerar before heading out cross country on ANY bike.
on a related note, there are two dudes on youtubecrossing the entire country on scooters while filming it. great idea, not so great execution they end up loking like a couple fags. that idea has so much potential tho 10/23/2007 7:11:01 AM |

I'd totally rock an EX500 cross country, albeit with raised clip-ons. Hell, one of my ME buddies many moons ago did it on a Shadow VLX several times. That VLX had damn near more miles than any Honda I had ever seen. Granted, the riding position is somewhat better, and the suspension softer...
If I wanted to take my sweet time and get stupid fuel mileage I'd probably do it on an EX250 or a Honda Nighthawk 250.
Frac's brother fucking did it on a Royal Enfield...and you know how much power they have. A fucking thumper no less. 10/23/2007 8:52:54 AM |

i don't know of any used bike only place in raleigh, most dealerships carry used bikes they got on trade in 10/23/2007 3:33:59 PM |

If y'all would go cross country on a 500r, you're tougher than me. The seat is too narrow, and from experience, gets horribly uncomfortable once you cross the 5 to 6 hour mark. No way I could do it for several days in a row.
As for the OPs question, check all the dealerships. I bought my bike used from a normal dealer in Charlotte. I don't have much experience with dealerships, but I don't think motorcycle dealerships are as divided between new and used the way car dealerships are. Best bet is still craigslist though. Just don't buy sight unseen and know what you're looking for when you go to look at the bike. If you don't ride yet, take a friend who does and let him check it over/test ride. 10/23/2007 4:32:35 PM |

here's pics and info pm me if u want more. from my experience these are SOLID bikes that are very reliable, and will serve well for a cross country trip..if u want to go with something sportier.
'Description: Black w/ Charcoal grey trim on the bottom, flush mounted front signals, gel grips, Micron slip-on, Galfer Rear brake rotor and pads, Galfer Steel braided front brakes (i have rear ones but didn't install them yet), Metzler Z6 tires (front & rear both w/ less than 700 miles), Ivan's Stage 1 jet kit (yes she's carb'd), and upgraded gearing - changed from 15/45 to 14/47.
I'm am selling it because I have another bike and I no longer use this one. She's a good first or second bike.
I own it and have title in hand. '
it's an 02 with a lil over 15k miles.

If your seriously considering riding across coutry I would look at a
-Ninja 250 (add taller handle bars, a gel/corbin seat and a taller windscreen) -Nighthawk 250 (change seat) -Or a new scooter like a Burgman or a reflex
All these bikes have the ability to cruise at highway speeds and get great gas mileage. Plus all of them are extremely durable bikes that (knock on wood) won't break on you.

saying a 250 has the ability to cruise at highway speeds is like saying you have the ability to not act like a retard. neither is happening for very long or very often. 10/23/2007 10:37:54 PM |

BBR you couldn't be more wrong, my roomate had a Ninja 250 for about 6 months and it was more then capable of cruising 80mph all day. Also on another note it is possible to run 100mph on a Ninja 250 so don't knock it until you've tried it. Great bikes for the money.

i have tried it. 250's have their place, but it's not on a cross country trip. furthermore, a ninja anything would suck to ride that far from a comfort standpoint. you can pick up a 600cc+ entry level cruiser for the same money. 10/23/2007 11:43:36 PM |

agreed i rode that shit and it would cruise at 80+ easily all day long. bbr please comment on something that u KNOW ABOUT they WILL go 105+mph i've done it and been clocked. maybe if bbr wasnt so fucking fat or stupid he could get it up to that fast.

yeah, i'm sure you rode it on trips for hundreds/thousands of miles. there are scooters that go highway speeds, does that mean they're a good choice to ride across the country? a 250 for distance riding is as about as useful as you two idiots.

i had a new 05 ninja 500 with no mods or anything and i rode it 5 hours to south carolina and was extremely sore. I doubt I would go much past that on it. And while the spedometer went much higher at about 115 the bike started shaking a bit much for my liking. Also the effects of wind on a bike like that were even harder to control. Maybe it was just me not weighing anything but i seriously got blown around a few times. 10/24/2007 8:33:46 AM |

1. That's a YZF-600. There's no such thing as an '02 FZR 2. $4000 would be a rip-off 3. Good first sportbike, and pretty comfortable--but not the kind of thing I'd wanna ride XC. 4. Make sure 2nd gear doesn't exhibit any bad symptoms...they are notoriously weak. I had one, and blew up 2nd gear at like 9k miles or something.
Quote : | "-Ninja 250 (add taller handle bars, a gel/corbin seat and a taller windscreen) -Nighthawk 250 (change seat) -Or a new scooter like a Burgman or a reflex" |
To hell with that.
I'm not saying they won't do it...I'm just saying it would fucking suck.
I would not get ANY sort of sportbike. First of all, NO sportbike is really a good first motorcycle (other than a Ninja 250/500 or SV-650 if you want to count them). 2nd, even the more comfortable ones are still not very comfortable relative to pretty much any other kind of motorcycle. They also offer little wind/rain protection. 3rd, you'll ruin a set of sportbike tires by doing a trip like that.
Get a cruiser, or maybe a standard. If you want a sportbike later, then buy one when it's the right tool for the job.10/24/2007 8:37:49 AM |

Hard to believe, but probably one of the dumbest things you've ever said.
The lack of weight of the bike, maxxed out rpm's for hours and hours(vibrating your nuts to WAY past being sterile or even feeling like real nuts again...wait, go for it slowblack and prove us wrong), wind buffeting, no acceleration available at highway speeds, etc, would completely suck ass cross country.
Yeah, it could and has been done, but not a good suggestion at all.
