WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could cost taxpayers a total of $2.4 trillion by 2017 when counting the huge interest costs because combat is being financed with borrowed money, according to a study released on Wednesday.
With President George W. Bush indicating a large contingent of U.S. troops likely will be engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan for many years to come, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the total tab for the wars from 2001 through 2017." |

That comes to about $8000 for every man, woman, and child in the United States.
Is it worth it? Is there nothing better that money could have been spent on? Isn't it time we cut our losses and get out of there?]10/25/2007 9:08:11 AM |

Those crazy towel heads were better off w/ Saddam ruling with an iron fists. Uday locked some soccer guys in torture boxes, saddam gassed some kurds, oh well better than Ackbar mulSaladeen strapping on a bomb and blowing up 100 women and children in the market; having 3000 of our troops killed, wasting nearly a trillion on the war effort, and pissing off our allies w/ the rest of the world at us.

they knew it would cost more than that, they just needed a lowball number that would lull the public into thinking it would be quick and easy......despite what nearly everyone who was non-partisan and had real military experience was telling them.

did you really just make that comparison? hitler was a real threat to take over most of the world, and even then we didn't really want to get involved. Sadam didn't have the capability to do much of anything.

last time i checked england, france, china, and numerous other countries were at war or under thread of invasion from the various countries of the axis powers.
I do not think Saddam had the capabilities or plans pre-invasion to take over the Middle East. I am sure Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Israel would have easily slapped him back to the sand dune he came from.
As far as Vunderschinland at least it would have been germans getting blown up in the streets by the suicide bombers and the rest of us laughing at the disaster going on in Iraq. I am sure like the Soviet Union in Afghanistan that would not be able to handle the craziness and eventually give up.

That is spread out over 14 years. So, it was only $571 this year.
That, plus, why are they including interest when they could easily cut entitlement programs and balance the budget, so why allot the deficit to the war? It's not the war's fault its daddy cannot budget; so leave it alone. 10/26/2007 8:53:03 AM |

^ not that i advocate more gov't spending but you would rather spend money paid by the taxpayers to fight a unpopular unjustified foreign war, than using this money to benefit the people that paid it.
Between the two; I'd rather cut checks every week to 1000 crack mommas to sit around and drink 40's than buy a new B2 bomber to help blow up people in Iraq or any new enemy we create through our neo-imperialist policies.

Maybe more emphasis on the fact that this spending is going to suppliers who make enormous profits would bother war supporters more then, since they detest giving people money to people who don't deserve it, but don't seem to mind much if the wrong people are killed. 10/26/2007 10:36:23 AM |

^ I do not want to pay for that shit either; neither do I want to pay for George W to play cowboy running around the middle east with a stick in hand poking a bee nest also known as the Middle East. Ultimately when it is his buddies in haliburton, big oil, and other defense contractors that are profiting.
Maybe if the oil taps in Iraq were wide open and I paid $1.25/gallon at the pump I could overlook Bush's true intentions in Iraq, the countless civilians dead, and American lives lost in a war of american aggression.

Wow, if this isn't the most retarded perspective I have ever heard in my life. So you're ok that your tax dollars went towards 3000 dead soldiers, thousands of dead Iraqis, and millions displaced Iraqis, rather than trying to fix folks that have made bad choices for themselves? Drug addicts can be revived, dead soldiers can't.
Furthermore, how is it a step in the right direction if we have now moved on to saber rattling Iran?
When will it stop, when we have completely neutralized all of Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Turkey from even contemplating becoming a thread, let alone actually being a threat?10/26/2007 1:45:08 PM |
