it gets even better when you've watched enough (from the start of season 1 as I have, because I liked the UK office so much) and you get more invested in the characters than just a Seinfeldian laugh factory

Yeah it's one of those shows that is only really funny when you know the characters, their histories, and can find and appreciate the subtleties. As far as primetime comedies go, I think it's one of the best on TV right now. I guess that's not fair, I really don't watch much TV at all, but this is one of the few shows I actually will sit down for.

I can't emphasize enough the need to know backstory and character developments to get a lot of the humor, and I know that is a big turn off for a lot of people, especially since it is season 4 now...

But it also is a very different flavor of humor that you either like or don't
