some mushrooms are indeed quite toxic.

some amanitas contain amatoxins which causes liver failure (one death cap could kill a child). this does kill some people each year, and it is the worst type of poisoning.

some cortinarius contain orellanine which causes kidney failure.

many mushrooms in the genus coprinus contain a chemical called coprine which is not dangerous itself, but disrupts the liver's ability to metabolize alcohol. if you drink within several days before or after ingesting these mushrooms you could feel quite ill, but it isn't that dangerous (similar to anabuse.)

there are several different classes of mushroom toxins that cause non-lifethreatening but very mood altering reactions, and many of these mushrooms have been considered sacred in the past for the reactions they cause upon ingestion.


This includes ibotenic acid found in fly agaric mushroom, which is the most likely candidate for the mysterious substance Soma which was used by vedic priests to induce visions and for inspiring religious poems.

another toxin is called muscarine, found in clitocybes, and it makes you salivate, and cry (produce tears, at least) uncontrollably as it overstimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. Ingesting mushrooms which contain this chemical can be deadly but with treatment can quickly be reversed with atropine.

Everyone is familiar with the so-called magic mushrooms in the genus Psilocybe, which contain psilocybin and psilocin, which, obviously, make you trip balls. this effect was worshiped by they mayas and i suppose they are still worshiped by some today. unfortunately these mushrooms are often small and rather non-descript, and can be confused for deadly Galerina mushrooms, which contain amanantin.


Psilocybe cyanescens, one of the strongest magic mushrooms-- they don't grow around here, sorry!


There are a few other types of toxins found in mushrooms, but their effects are generally non-life threatening and limited to gastrointestinal upset, varying from mild to severe (i don't know what constitutes severe, don't ask). these can take the form of proteins and amino acids, or various compounds that can be cooked off, but consumption of raw specimens may make you ill. some people are very sensitive to these compounds and others seem immune.



Chlorophyllum molybdites this one makes you sick to your stomach.





with all that said, mushroom identification is not horribly complicated, but if you are interested in eating wild mushrooms, you should definitely consult an expert opinion before you chow down, and document your mushrooms just in case. The texture and flavor of fresh local mushrooms just cannot be compared with their dried out, senesced grocery store counterparts-- and their nutritional value is higher too. there are many delightful edible species-- here are just a few!

i recommend for a life altering prespective, but only if you're in the right mind set. If you're completely void of mental stability at the current time, this will fuck you up pretty bad.

its really not that pleasant of a trip. most of the active compounds pass through your system unaltered, so the vedics would eat the mushrooms (well, they drank it in milk, whatever), get all sick from secondary toxins, collect their piss and drink that for the "purer" high which is supposedly when they got all their work done. they liked this drug because its stimulant properties make you very garrulous as well, so they were able to compose beautiful hymns while trippin their balls off.

the amanita muscaria was used in many Siberian shamanc rituals, and until the last couple hundred years was the social drug of choice among the moneyed siberians, there was quite a trade in the dried product. poor people would hang around outside the houses of the rich folks and drink their urine when they went to relieve themselves for the same reasons as the vedic priests

saute some mushrooms and sweet onions in olive oil, ad a bit of pepper and garlic.


and on another pan, simmer some chicken in olive oil with cajun seasoning.


mix the two after cooked, make some mac n cheese, mix all three

there are representatives from just about all families of fungus here. Fungi are very widely spread as their little spores can float very, very long distances on the wind. a genus may have species on several continents.

all of the pictures i posted, members of each genus (and for most of them, the actual species i posted) can be found in our state, although psilocybes are pretty damn rare here. 200 miles north or south is much better hunting. but i don't condone that stuff anyway

there's 3 related genera that share strong psilocybin production (psilocybe, panaeolus, gymnopilus)

but not all members of all 3 genera produce the active compounds

and there's about 10 more genera with scattered low concentration psilocybin presence

for what it is worth, my degree is in plant biology. for some reason fungi are still taught with plants in many ways even though they compromise their own kingdom and it is postulated that they are more closely related to animals than plants (the proteins in their cells are largely keratin, the same protein that makes up animal hair and nails/claws). other departments that study the effects of fungi and how to kill them ( ) are the forestry department and the department of plant pathology.

agaricus bisporus, the table mushroom.

this species includes the white button mushroom, crimini mushrooms and portobellos


(so for all of you people who are mixing them and think you have a nice medley there, SIKE)


i collected some closely related ones yesterday, Agaricus campestris. they are good eating but there are poisonous agarics that look fairly similar so i didn't feel like chancing it (even if all i was chancing was a night on the john).
