Quote : | "Good morning students!
I find myself up on my soap-box again this morning. I have just checked my e-mails from over the weekend--and several, from students I don't know, began:
Hey!!
To me, it sounds like someone is shouting at me or admonishing me, even though to you, it probably sounds like a cheerful hello.
PLEASE be professional WHENEVER addressing someone at their workplace, whether they are doctors, professors, administrators, or admissions teams. This applied whether you are e-mailing, calling, sending a letter, or in person. At a medical establishment or university, Dr. is a good guess if you don't know someone's title. Mr., Mrs., or Ms. works well in most other situations. If you don't know someone's name, use Dear Sir or Madam, or simply Good Morning, etc. If you don't know someone's gender, you can use Dear Chris Jones (for example) or Hello/Good Morning, or Dear Mr/Ms. Jones as a last resort.
Hey, 'Sup Dude, and first names are not appropriate unless you have established a casual, first name basis with the person you are writing.
Please offer all professionals you work with, some respect. Thank you.
Climbing down from the soap box,
Ms. Kelley" |
usually it is also appropriate to use correct spelling and english grammar when writing emails as well.

Quote : | "Good Morning!
I wanted to share with you, two emails that I received in response to my "respect" email yesterday. Before I copy and paste them below, I just want you all to know that this is not about me, despite how it may have sounded. It is about how you present yourself to others and the impression that you leave. Something to think about as you shadow, apply to graduate and professional schools, and interview for jobs.
First email:
From: student.ncsu@yahoo.com
hey! if you know this is just supposed to be a friendly hello, then why are you making a mountain out of a mole hill? sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays!
sincerely an unprofessional student
Second email:
From: Kourtney.Patcher.db@gmail.com
Hay der Mr. Bobby!!!!!
how does I get in-two med skcool???
Thanks man!
Jakson Philips
PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL unless you would like to tell me who these students are. Thank you. Enjoy your week.

Nor here, other than being an oversensitive, crazy bitch.
Typo. That's what spellcheck is for.

Yes, there is a problem here.
And here.
I wish I knew the rules and various names for parts of sentences like I used to. If I did, I could explain better why 1 and 2 are okay. But it's okay, StillFuchsia is online right now\] 10/30/2007 2:59:53 PM

why are you even a member of the "health pac"? you can totally get in without their help 11/5/2007 3:32:32 PM

I appreciate this thread! However, what is really needed is a superior who would not just receive but regularly initiate anonymous feedback about the performance of the Health Pac office in general and the individuals who make up that office. I think that would might stop a few sarcastic emails.
*rant proceeding*
I doubt that the hilarious email responses Ms. Kelley received in reply to her "soap box" email will have any affect, but something really needs to be done about the attitude in that office. If you want someone to be professional and respectful towards you, you can start by treating them with professionalism and respect! Nearly every action that I have seen the individuals in this office take since it was formed has shown an attitude that treats all associated students like children.
A blanket email about this type of thing is counterproductive. Ms. Kelley has beaten this thing so far in to the ground it is laughable. If she was so offended, she should have emailed those individuals directly. Ms. Kelley's claim that "this is not about me" is hugely overshadowed by her disappointing choice to end her email with "PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL unless you would like to tell me who these students are." Is she serious? Grow up.
Those who have received emails from the Health Pac listserv for a year or so have already heard this from her ten times by now. Seriously, ask someone about emails from Ms. Kelley and they will tell you they very rarely receive a message outside of 1) A condemnation of the student population's level of professionalism, 2) An ad for one of 734658389 practice MCATs for a low, low fee of $10, or 3) An ultimatum of some kind, whether it is with respect to application dates or the now all too common "You MUST do this if you wish to use any Health Pac services" activities.
* rant complete*

it's the attitude of the entire administration that needs changing, not just a lone office.
her posting of email addresses is also illegal, which is something i would pursue if I were so inclined. 11/5/2007 7:26:46 PM
