$200 bucks
player, 300, Bourne Identity and any two HD-DVD movies (I chose Transformers and Shaun of the Dead)
plus you get the MIR for 5 free movies (I'm picking up Black Rain, Rattle and Hum, Pitch Black, Full Metal Jacket, and The Italian Job)
plus, if you have a Rewards Zone card, you should have gotten a 12% off home theatre coupon in the mail this weekend (maybe check the reward zone site if you didn't)
walked out with 9 HD-DVD's and a stand-alone player for ~$180 today
edit:awesome, I love misspelling shit in the title and not being able to edit it

HD HVD? will those discs play in my HD-DVD player? not being able to edit titles sucks!

thats a pretty awesome deal though. Considering that most HD DVD's retail from a range of $24.99 - $34.99 11/4/2007 12:52:47 AM |

the HD-A2 was the one on sale at Wally World on Friday. Basically the same thing but apparently the sound output over optical on the A2 is better than the sound output on the A3 (1.5Mbs Dolby DTS on the A2 and 640Kbs Dolby Digital on the A3.) 11/4/2007 8:16:24 AM |

yeah, worst case scenario, if blu ray wins out, you get an upconverting DVD player for ~$100 bucks and hopefully be able to get HD DVDs for dirt cheap 11/4/2007 10:50:00 AM |

Any decent 1080p television is going to display the 1080i signal as 1080p natively anyway. 11/4/2007 4:41:05 PM |

only if you spent less than $10 on your TV.
Deinterlacing artifacts are not as bad as people make them out to be, especially if you have a quality TV. 11/4/2007 6:21:54 PM |

but for the sake of promoting PS3's and blu-ray we'll just say that if you don't have 1080p you suck.

Golovko, will you stop with that? I've seen the PS3 operating as a Blu-Ray player and there's nothing wrong with it. As a stand-alone player, the only complaint I would have is that it doesn't come with a remote. The only real down-side to the Blu-Ray technology is cost.
The HDi and Blu-Ray's counterpart (java based, don't remember what it's called) are not fully implemented on any players yet, so you can't gripe about one an not the other. The image quality problems in Blu-Ray have been eliminated a long time ago.
And as for the 1080i/1080p argument, you aren't going to notice deinterlacing artifacts on modern TVs except for high motion scenes on larger displays (ca. 50" +), unless you're looking for them. 11/4/2007 7:39:10 PM |

Also, movies at some point (if not already) will support 1080/60p at which point you probably would be able to tell a difference compared to a 1080i tv easily.

Should have waited until Sunday...its now 3 free HD-DVDs rather than 2...so 10 total. You may be able to go in and attempt a price match though. Many people on DVDTalk and avsforum seemed to have success with it.
Also, thats the old Full Metal Jacket...you may not care, but Im going for the newly released Deluxe Edition as one of my 3 free (along with Serenity and V for Vendetta most likely...was going to do Batman Begins, but its cheap on DDD and I may just buy a few during the 20% off sale coming up).
Oh, and reasons why HD-DVD is better than Blu-Ray: Battlestar Galactica Season 1, 12/4/2007 (package even comes with the corners cut ).11/5/2007 1:15:52 AM |

Most of the difference you'd be able to see would be the same as if you were going from 1080p/30 to 1080p/60. Seriously guys, if you didn't buy the $300 fell off the back of a truck Vizio 7 years ago, you're not going to notice.11/5/2007 7:46:22 AM |

just to clarify...my TV is 1080i (oh no, I am behing the curve!) and I have a PS3
I bought the player because it was a good deal and there are some movies on HD-DVD that I wanted
and the bit on Full Metal Jacket, yeah, it's the old one, but it's the free one...no other movies in that offer's pairing that I'd want anyway
the only issue I have with the player is that it seems to take a while to power up and load the movie, but that's no biggie
all in all, a player and ~$250 worth of movies for $180 out the door makes me plenty happy 11/5/2007 11:22:19 AM |
