The 2 radios pictured above cost some chedda...
one on the left is a receive only (no transmit) Pro96 scanner...you can pick one up for around $400...one on the right is another story...that is a Motorola XTS 5000...and it has a price tag of around $3000-$3500 with the options it has flashed into it...and even then it has to be approved to be added to the Wake County Radio system

Yeah...damn things are pretty much indestructible...Although Raleigh PD is getting Moto XTS 25Ks instead of XTS 5Ks due to trying to keep costs down...imagine trying to budget 3 grand for every RPD officer to have a WT...ain't happenin'...Right now there are RPD "test" patches from UHF->800Mhz on Channels 1 (Dispatch),2 (South Status),3 (North Status), & 8 (Traffic Enforcement & other specialized Units)...radio templates final stages of being configured with mutual aid zones/channels being mapped...

When JoCo went to the 800's a few years ago, I watched them drop one from 10' up onto concrete repeatedly, and then submerge it in a 5 gallon bucket of water for 10 minutes to prove how robust they are. They're pretty damn amazing - cut it off, wipe the water off the battery terminals, and fire it back up.

JoCo does not use Moto XTS 5Ks...they use a MA/Com Provoice EDACS system which uses LPE/Jaguar Radios...granted LPE/Jaguar Radios are durable as well but Johnston starting using their EDACS system long before the Moto XTS 5000 was even around...
