I'm looking at this 22' Samsung for my mac mini.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A0964719
I don't really know anything about LCD monitors, but was wondering how this compared to other LCDs for price/quality.
Any input would be awesome 11/6/2007 12:00:19 PM |

I picked up the Acer X222Wbd at newegg when they had it.
I love it, and I couldn't find a better deal at $279 with free shipping.
Crystalbrite ftw.

brighter and more crisp
as long as you can block glare. 11/6/2007 1:19:10 PM |

my buddy has the samsung.
it's nice, but mine looks better thanks to the crystalbrite.
I dont think samsung offers a gloss screen 11/6/2007 1:28:35 PM |
Jrb599 All American 8846 Posts user info edit post |
No it doesn't
I've heard bad things about a glossy screen.
Also the samsung can get a 3000:1 contrast ratio. 11/6/2007 1:35:59 PM |

haha
do you know anything about contrast ratio? how it's measured?

Yeah I saw it there, once you factor in the shipping new egg chargers(dell has free shipping). They are basically the same. 11/6/2007 1:46:53 PM |

brightness and a glossy screen are the biggest factor. (along with viewing angle.)
anything less than 12ms is not going to ghost
contrast is basically a moot point
if you have a bright ass room, go non-gloss.
[Edited on November 6, 2007 at 1:51 PM. Reason : contrast is measured differently across manufacturers. do a little research on LCD contrast.] 11/6/2007 1:50:25 PM |

i for one cannot stand glossy screens, while they look nice, there's almost never a time in which i don't see glare unless i have all the lights off in the room, but i haven't seen the Acer Crystalbrite screens before

and quite a few of the multimedia laptops have gloss screens. check one out to get an idea of glare.

I despise the fact that my laptop, which is a convertible tablet model, has a glossy screen. GLARE FROM HELL when trying to use it as a tablet in a room with fluorescent overhead lighting. Like just about everywhere on campus.
But yeah...glossy screens look very nice IF you're not near any glare-prone light sources or windows. I'd personally rather have a matte screen and not have to worry so much, but that's just me. 11/6/2007 2:56:36 PM |
GraniteBalls Aging fast 12262 Posts user info edit post |
for my laptop ill stick with non-gloss.
for my dimly lit bedroom, SUPER SHINE.
and yeah, gloss on a laptop is a pretty bad idea, unless the point is to push it as a desktop replacement. 11/6/2007 3:57:49 PM |

I have that Dell you are thinking about. It's been about a year and I've had no problems; it's the best monitor I've ever had. I like it because out of all the monitors I looked at, it had the sturdiest feeling in my opinion with regards to the base. The black-silver color scheme also matched my system well.

picked up a 19" WS from LG at best buy a little while back and i love this thing. only disappointment really is that i can't mount it as portrait. Leopard will handle the rotation but the stand doesn't support it.
3000:1, 2ms, and i think 300 on brightness? FTW
compared to my 15.4" WS mb pro, this thing is blinding 11/7/2007 2:36:24 AM |

^^ besides the brightness, what is the difference between these two and why did you go for the more expensive version
cheap:

expensive:

im not sure if the cheap one does HDCP and the extra inputs arent there
i guess they are difference panels

oh yeah thats common with LCDs. you just have to degauss it. if you can't find the menu option just use a magnet on the problem area.11/14/2007 10:36:55 AM |

I'm thinking of getting my dad a new monitor for Christmas, and I have no idea where to start... He just got a new dell processor and still has the crappy little box monitor. He only uses his home computer for basic things - itunes, random searching, checking emails, and playing solitaire. I'm thinking somewhere in the 19" to 22" range, flat screen. Any ideas? (forgive me, i'm very computer un-savvy) 11/15/2007 1:47:28 PM |

I got an Acer AL2216WBD (link in jrb's post above). Very nice upgrade from my 3 year old Sceptre 19" LCD.
I'll probably ditch the Sceptre and get a 2nd AL2216WBD after Christmas if the price comes down.
Rebate came back in about 6 weeks.
