So technically I don't live alone, but my roomate has spent about one night here the last month. It's really starting to get me down. I hate coming home at the end of the night and being alone, and lately I have been getting freaked out about weird stuff. I constantly hear people walking around right outside my window. A few nights ago someone was standing out there breaking glass (which I later found right outside my front door). Tonight around midnight someone starts knocking on the door and since I wasn't expecting anyone to come over I didn't answer, because if it had been one of my friends they would have called. I hear the person walking around right outside my door for about 10 minutes, then what sounds like a baby crying. I feel really unsafe here especially since right before I moved in two girls got robbed by a guy with a gun right out front. Any suggestions on how to be less paranoid? Anyone want to move in with me?

Well I don't really want to move because I love my place, how we decorated and everything, we put a good amount of work into it. A dog is a good idea but I can't afford one. I'm just frustrated I guess. 11/9/2007 2:11:04 AM

I understand the being frustrated part. Most people don't like being alone with good reason.
As for the neighborhood being sketchy part (which doesn't exactly make you want to go outside and frolic around meeting new people), I highly recommend you move somewhere somewhere else for sure. Some places near campus are just filled with drunk assholes at night, and while they're mostly harmless, it's pretty annoying to deal with that every night and wonder "was that glass breaking a drunk or somebody breaking into a car?".
If you don't really know your roommate that well, and you don't know that many other people that well, consider looking up a classifieds ad on TWW or CL or something and find somebody you could stand to live with that lives in a better complex (like a newer townhouse complex in east Cary or something).
As for the lonely part: Go and get involved in your community somehow. Joining a church was fun for me, and I haven't even done that much in it yet besides Sunday service. There's a lot of activities and things I could do in the church to meet all kinds of awesome people, and it wouldn't be a bad way to meet a potential roommate honestly. Of course, I'm assuming you're religious here. It's all I really have in my head as an idea though. You might get mixed results if you go out and meet somebody at a bar or something and ask to be their roommate. ![](images/beatup.gif) 11/9/2007 2:19:50 AM

Well my roommate is one of my good friends, and I do miss her being around. It's not so much that I'm lonely though, as I am just sketched out when i hear babies crying outside my front door at midnight. My parents really want me to get my concealed carry permit and have a gun but I haven't really felt like it was necessary...I am thinking about reconsidering though but I'm not sure that would make me feel a whole lot safer since my fear of guns is greater than my fear of burglars haha. 11/9/2007 2:25:52 AM

i own numerous firearms and am comfortable and proficient with them, but I'm not convinced that owning a gun would be much of a solution for you (although if strictly for home defense, you don't need a CC permit...and a shotgun would prob be your best bet--not to mention less expensive).
but unless you are going to practice with it and gain/maintain some reasonable proficiency...and unless you feel like you will be able to operate under pressure well enough to do yourself some good with it (and not get yourself into an even bigger mess by upping the ante), and above all, unless you are pretty confident that you are capable of looking another human being in the eye and killing him, a gun isn't going to solve many problems for you. A gun is a great tool, but it's not the answer for everyone. 11/9/2007 2:38:12 AM

Which is more important, getting a good night sleep and not being paranoid 24/7 while you are at home or having a pretty apartment?
As already said, a weapon isn't worth jack if you can't be secure with yourself using it. If you aren't, chances are your attacker will get to you before you have a chance to use it and then use it against you.
Sounds like you live off Method Road, Lake Park, or some crazy ghetto. 11/9/2007 4:27:13 AM

You don't need a concealed carry permit to own a gun. Buying a gun and knowing how to use it would probably make you feel a lot safer.
What might be a better idea though would be to meet everyone you live around during the day. Make friends with a meathead or other relatively brawny guy that thinks he is invincible. Then when shit happens in the middle of the night, give him a call and tell him you're scared. Let him deal with the crazies. 11/9/2007 7:09:17 AM

You could date some loser that gets evicted/has to move every three months that would pretty much guarantee he would be there every night.
Why don't you just move? I just don't get the logic of living somewhere you are scared/miserable because you like how its decorated. It seems like it would be nicer to have to rehang your pictures and stuff to not worry about getting raped/slaughtered every time you left.
Maybe its the whole guy being practical vs. girl worrying about ridiculous details thing. 11/9/2007 8:42:10 AM

I think if I lived alone, I'd stay SO busy elsewhere I'd never clean. I have to force myself to stop now and clean house, usually when my roommate goes on a cleaning spree. It's a lot easier for me to work in groups. And with 2 cats (one of them being a big 20 lb orange shit factory), it can get pretty bad if I let it.
If you feel your safety is threatened, though, then I would recommend finding a new place, regardless of how much work you've done getting your current place like you want it. There are NO guarantees with ANY kind of defense weapon, regardless of how proficient you are with their use. If your adversary has the element of surprise working in his favor, you are at a SERIOUS disadvantage, no matter how much heat you're packing. How quickly can you tase somebody if you wake up, groggy, with the barrel of a gun on your head? 11/9/2007 8:50:06 AM

luckezCharms, didn't you say that pets are allowed at your apartments? If so, then get a dog or cat. Having an animal to keep you company makes a good difference, and its much better than being alone. 11/9/2007 8:50:51 AM

i've heard about the baby crying thing, too. don't open your door!!! get some mace or a taser, and pretend that you're not home until they go away. if it really is a friend, they'll call you if you don't answer the door. that's really creepy that people are walking around outside your windows and doors. i wouldn't hesitate to call the police, either. 11/11/2007 1:56:00 PM
