"Johnston Intruder Pinned By Car Dies
Cornelius Brown

Posted: Today at 8:58 a.m.
Updated: Today at 9:56 a.m.

Selma — An intruder who police say was pinned between a car and a fence has died at the hospital.

John Reid said he pulled into his driveway near the intersection of Hawkins Road and U.S. Highway 301 between Micro and Selma Thursday afternoon when he noticed two men getting into a brown sedan outside a gate on his property.

Reid, whose property had been burglarized several times in the past year, said he did not want the pair to escape.

"They were coming from behind my property, and I knew something was wrong there," he said.

Reid said he tried to block the sedan in with his truck. When the driver of the sedan, Cornelius Brown, got out and tried to run, Reid said he hit the gas pedal.

"My foot ended up getting stuck on the gas pedal and in between the brake, and I hit their car," he said.

Authorities said Brown was pinned between the car and a gate post. He was airlifted to Duke University Hospital, where he later died. It is not yet known when Brown died.

Authorities also took Mark Ray McNair, 46, of Dudley, into custody in connection with the incident.

Investigators found a stolen piece of machinery belonging to Reid into the back of the sedan. Reid said the stolen equipment was a piece of machinery used to dig holes.

Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said Thursday no final determination has been made, but it was unlikely Reid will be charged.

"I don't think John Reid has done anything wrong, but the investigation is ongoing," Bizzell said. "The bottom line is these guys shouldn't be on his property and, most definitely, should not have been stealing the merchandise that belongs to Mr. Reid.""

now only if i could shoot a nigga on my property and get away with it. or ill just pin him against a fence and shoot him

I enjoyed reading this too. What I didn't enjoy is the wasted money in airlifting this guy to hospital.

at the least, he could/should get vehicular manslaughter. You can get vehicular manslaughter just by accidentally hitting someone who walks in front of your car. In this case, he did it on purpose.

That's not to say i think he should get in trouble or go to jail or something, but still - if you kill someone, no matter how or what happens, you need to get charged with something

Good. This should happen to more thieves.

When you boil it down, all real crime (the kind that should be criminal, not some of the bullshit that is considered criminal) is either theft or violence. I'm firmly of the opinion that theft deserves a much more severe punishment than it currently receives. I'm not for executing thieves, but I think you should receive, at minimum, a fine equal to the value of the property stolen and a lengthy prison sentence.

"During the 11-minute 911 call, Reid repeatedly asked for an ambulance to come to treat Brown, saying the suspected thief had hit his head and suffered extensive injuries.

"I don't want this character dying on my property," he said.

Reid also could be heard during the call shouting at the second suspected thief.

"Listen, buddy. I've been broken into three times," he yelled. "You shouldn't have been messing around in my yard."

Brown was airlifted to Duke University Hospital, where he died Friday morning.

Investigators found a piece of machinery belonging to Reid into the back of the suspects' car.

Mark Ray McNair, 46, of Dudley, was charged with trespassing and larceny in connection with the incident. He remained in the Johnston County Jail Friday."

There you go, that seals the deal for me. They were in fact stealing from him and he has every right to protect his property by reasonable means. I don't think hitting/blocking their car with his is unreasonable.

No. Dead is better. If he is still alive and paralyzed he'll get his 12 year old cousin Jerome to steal for him.

Right, but I don't think he intended to use deadly force. He hit the car, I don't think he intended to kill anyone. Yes, he did and maybe for legal reasons intent doesn't matter, but... well fuck 'em, they were taking his shit.

Also, its just a matter of time before the family of this "good man" sue, bc after all he was no doubt on his way to church.

I hate to hear about this kind of thing.

I mean, the dude was running away, and according to the man behind the wheel, his foot got stuck, and he didn't mean to kill him.

That sucks.

I don't see how you guys can get excited about it. The man claims he didn't mean to kill the other guy, which means this basically like one big accident where somebody ended up dead. That's almost always regrettable.

^LOL. I LOVE the foot got stuck. It reminds me of southpark when they hunt, and yell, "oh my god its coming right for us" before they shoot some animal just eating.

I guess most are celebrating the fact that a worthless idiot is dead. And statistically speaking our stuff just got a tiny bit safer. This guy just did us all a courtesy flush.

^AHA....You got a tiny bit safer? Are you the head of a construction crew where your materials are repeatedly stolen from you by thieves (some of whom are your employees)?

All you uppity fools don't know shit about construction/landscaping...

I'm sorry you're all naive idiots who don't get the game, and I guess I'm the only one trashy enough to get it.

Shit happens in these situations, and most folks don't go to bed praying that somebody dies.

you guys are some real cold-hearted sons of a bitches. Either that, or you just like to talk a big game.

i mean, really - what do you know about this guy except that he was caught stealing some farm equipment? That simple fact alone is enough to justify his death? Did he deserve to be punished? Of course! But would you have supported the death penalty for him had he gone to court? I doubt it.... is it just in the case of vigilante justice that you support the wanton killing of criminals?

^did he deserve to be punished? yes

did he deserve to die? I dunno. I doubt it was his first time around the block

However, he did die. And I refuse to feel bad about someone who dies while commiting a crime vs. the numbers that die everyday just going to work. So in the whole sceme of things, one less criminal to worry about is not a bad thing.

Turns out this guy was a career criminal.
"Both Brown and McNair have lengthy criminal records involving thefts. Reid also was convicted of 16 counts of breaking and entering and larceny in Warren County in 1988 and 1989, according to court records."

So yeah, no biggie. Actually the homeowner saved us all alot of money.

even if this wasn't his "first offense", or whatever, we (here in the US or the civilized world) have set the bar pretty damned high for condemning a person to punishment by death, and no amount of farm equipment in the backseat of a car is going to reach that bar.

and i don't care if you don't feel bad for him. But the responses in this thread go far beyond that. There seems to be a high amount of visceral hate and complete disregard for human life going on here.

on a side note, just curious here..... i'd like to see a show of hands of those among you who think this guy "got what was coming to him" or a similar attitude consider yourselves to be good, god-fearing Christians.

^I think we are looking at it two different ways.

Your thinking seems to be asking whether we should kill someone who was stealing. Thats not the point. I dont think you should be put to death for stealing. period.

However, in this case this career criminal died while in the process of stealing. This was not some court ordered process. The owner was trying to detain him and he died. Of which I feel NO sorrow for. My point is, he put himself in a potentially dangerous situation and was breaking the law.

I dont see it as visceral hate or disregard for human life in this thread, as you put it. People die everyday, but to expect people to feel about about one that died while commiting a crime and not be up in arms over it, is a little unrealistic. In my opinion.

^Im not sure if its really gloating. I think like alot of things on message boards, serious situations are made fun of.

Honestly, do you want the homeowner to be charged with something? Bridget, do you?

In this situation I feel worse for the homeowner. It would be a terrible thing to live with killing someone. I think. However, I do not feel sorry for the criminal. There will no doubt be a civil trial and his family will try to win the lottery, which is BS. There should be a rule that if you or a loved one is injured or killed while committing a crime you lose the ability to file suit or that injury or death.
