its called "transplant tourism"

people in china & india sell their organs (kidney, part of the liver whatever)

there is a loophole in the law that sort of allows this to go on

corrupt officials, doctors & organized crime take advantage of poor people (usually they are in debt) and get them to sell their organs

they get "$3,500" for a kidney

$40k is what it goes for to the person who needs it-- usually a wealthy person or someone in their family (usually americans)

$700 is what some of them end up with-- not $3,500 because its eaten up by brokers and middlemen

in china, people don't donate their organs due to religious reasons so organs available is very limited in the mainstream medical arena

china executes more people than any other country in the world. some are put to death for white collar crimes, other for robbery. medical staff stand by at the executions and harvest the organs as soon as the people are killed. they aren't informed that their organs will be removed (big surprise)

chinese officals confirmed that this is where they got organs from. a law in 2007 prohibited foreigners from getting transplants in china

a kidney in russia can go for $25k
a liver in the phillipines can go for $100k
a heart in south africa can go for $290k

there is also the buying and selling of body parts from cadavers that are orchestrated by funeral homes which can transmit diseases (this made headlines earlier this year). bones were replaced by pvc pipe and papers were forged. patients ended up with cancerous bones that they were told were from healthy willing individuals. now people who have these bones and tissues fused into their bodies have no choice but to be tested for diseases. these patients were not aware of what was going on, unlike people getting transplants in china and india.

one thing i left out. only 25% of people in the US are donors and only a fraction of people who die and are donors are able to donate their organs due to the nature of their death. but if 100% of the american population were organ donors, no one would die waiting for an organ.

lucky for me, discovery channel and history channel do a lot of shows that pertain to the industry i work in so i can pick up a lot of relevant info i can use at work

usually its building on existing knowledge and expanding on something i already knew a little bit about

its also cool to see the products your company makes in the shows that are teaching you
