we sit in the alum section across the field from you

i swear that when you guys start jumping, the stadium starts shaking and there is a huge affect on the atmosphere. its got to screw up their offensive calls

keep doing it, yall were off the hook today.

va tech students jump in the endzone before the team comes out to "enter sandman". get those students in our endzone early and start doing it

To all the students at the game today, you guys were awesome. During the UNC comeback the alumni side died, but you all kept up the noise and emotion. Great job

yeah that was cool to see, looks awesome

it was AMAZING on that 4th down play near the 40 in the final minutes

and whenever the band plays whatever it is they jump up and down to and some of the students jump up and down with them that looks really cool too, even better if everyone in the student section did it

i don't care how stupid you might think it is but it looks cool

ya i sat on the alum side today and everything is dead there. sat in seats on Row A in the middle of the field, but i kept wishing i was in the student section.

watching the "First Down" wave motion of everyone in the student section was remarkable, i love being a student in the student section.

^you mean the song "jump on it" where everyone jumps and rotates as the band plays?

Student section was amazing today. It was great to be in.

On Carolina's last drive me and one of my roommates always started shouting early and it just spread out from there (the painted guys would look back and start shouting as well. And everyone follows the painted dudes). Sitting in about the 6th row of 7/8. Some of the people around us almost stopped feeling it when they converted on 4th.

GO STATE.

I was wishing they'd do more of the "Hey (YOU SUCK!)" song, personally. 99% reaction from the student section to that one.

We were all happy when Carolina's band gave us the opportunity to shout it at them, though.

The student section was great on those last four plays on the 7 yard line. Generally, I try (unsuccessfully) to get people to get loud while the opposing team is in the huddle and we were all over getting loud early for those last four plays (and actually for a lot of the game). My voice was going at the end there so I think I personally was just making any loud noise I could possibly make. Sounding like a retard for the team is totally worth it.

Jumping up and down on the aluminum bleachers is one great way to help make some more noise, but clapping and/or shaking your keys are other ways of making extra noise that I'd like to see more widespread amongst the student section and the rest of the fans. If we yell, jump up and down on the bleachers, and shake our keys all at the same time we could be on the noise level of SEC stadiums (remember they yell and that's about it, since they have a fascination with pom-poms ). This is one reason why VaTech has such a loud crowd despite having only 66k.

I don't like the idea of always jingling keys just to make noise. For example, this game we saved it for the final couple seconds after we got the ball. Save it for victory.

Jumping on the bleachers should happen whenever there is shouting from here on out, though, no doubt. Makes noise, and the look of it gets the rest of the stadium pumped up. The student section also had a big chain of people lifting their arms at chest level (or the universal sign for "MAKE SOME NOISE"), that tended to at least help some of the students who weren't into it as much.

i think we need to do something to get the non-students to keep the Wave going. it was pathetic not seeing a successful wave at the game today.

Just the wave is lame. We need a little creativity if we want to do it(reverses, upper bowl going one way/lower going the other, etc). And why the fuck do people want to do that shit when we're at the line on offense.

^^^The section right next to 7/8 (is it parents and families or something?) doesn't seem to give half a shit about anything going on around them. They hardly even cheer at the games and generally just appear pissed off about sitting next to the most pumped up people in Carter Finley.

Cancel all their tickets and add another student section?

well let's try to get consistent with a basic wave first, then we'll change it up to make it awesome.

and pttyndal brings up a great point, i had to tell so many fans around me to keep it down when we were on offense, i think they were louder when we were on offense than when we were on defense. they were like "wat? why?"

^werd, they might as well have worn blue today

I was generally impressed by the students... filled up every student section to the brim and hardly a soul left. It also seemed like more people had learned the red and white song (other than the go to hell carolina! part). I was in the North end zone area, right were those final 4 nail biting downs happened. My ears have never been in actual *pain* from the noise at a football game until then... quite impressive sound intensity!

One complaint though: kids need to learn that, even if it inconveniences you to do so, you should turn around when doing the "first down" rather than doing it in the wrong direction!

pom poms may make the alumni get more excited, but so can a visual such as jumping up and down. it's all about visuals that tell other fans hey let's make some noise too. the difference between pom poms and jumping up and down on the aluminum stands is that the aluminum will make a noise.

Yelling + jumping on the aluminum seats + clapping/jingling keys

>

Yelling + violently shaking pom poms

It's all up to the painted dudes. Once they and a few others near the front started to move their arms down in a chest-level pushing movement (the universal symbol for "Shhh... bring it down now."), the student section quieted. I was surprised how often they had to be motioned to cease noise.

I wouldn't say we were louder on O than on D, but they did cheer for too long after we returned the kicks/punts.

Edit:
"It also seemed like more people had learned the red and white song"

Almost all the students know it, but for some reason few people sing it at a normal game, like they're embarrassed or something. I guess the rivalry game helped, and the fact that some of us were making an effort to sing it proudly. It's your fucking school, you sing because you are better than everyone else, now GET LOUD.

I was on the front row next to the band in the SEZ. That last drive was (like someone said earlier) bat-shit-insane LOL. All 4 student sections were shaking the stadium. It was Louuuud!

I loved everytime carolina tried to start the Tar-Heel chant, we would drown them out after a few times going back and forth. pwned

We don't have to use the jingling of the keys just as a symbol of hey it's over you might as well warm up the bus. I always tried to make as much noise as possible. I noticed that a few students on the front row of the endzones were banging on the padding. This is another great way of making more noise. I started doing this during the GT game last year and eventually got nearly everyone on the front row to slap them while yelling. It really does make a lot of noise. We need to start a thread breaking down what fans need to do cheering wise since we argue about it seemingly every week. Get this shit coordinated. For example when the opposing team is within their own 10 yard line, especially within their own 5, the fans should start the slow clap over their heads signaling that we want a safety. I remember when I first saw the students do that a few years ago and it looked and sounded awesome. I believe we ended up actually getting a safety too.

[about the 'hey you suck' song], yeah that's exactly what happened, the higher ups basically banned the band from playing that song because of the inevitable chant by the student section

personally I'd like to play it

Quote :

That's what I heard too being in the endzone but closer to the student section, the regular ticketholders just would not get back into the game like the students would

and the student section participation in most of the band's stuff was phenomenally better than I've ever seen it, almost everyone jumping to the JMU cadence, lots of dancing to apache, even doing the hand motions for the song we play after a qb sack, and most impressive of all, actually staying for the alma mater after the game and not only swaying, but singing too

I don't see why it shouldn't be that way for most every game though, like what somebody said earlier about people actually singing all of red and white
