How competitive are they? Specifically Carolina and Campbell.

I've heard conflicting reports from two friends that are in sort of related fields, and now my sis is asking me if I know anything.

id love to be a pharmacist who moonlights (daylights) as a lawyer.

im here to drop off this prescription for vicodin, and this citation for misdemanor assault!!1

but seriously, ive seen the carolina pharm degree on the walls of some of the most respected establishments in the area, such as the walmart and harris teeter pharmacies.

what kind of grade does your sis have? the typical acceptance is around 3.5 gpa and 85 percentile PCAT at UNC.

^^Hah. This is what I've been telling her

but then again, those fine establishments are paying $Texas for those degrees...

^She'd be going back to a pre-pharm program. So potentially a 4.0!

they take into account all your college grades, so just because you get 4.0 on pre-pharm doesn't mean it's 4.0 on the application.

I don't really know, then. Probably not a 3.5. Definitely >3.0

I'd imagine they'd take into account that her old grades and new grades took place at two very separate points in her life, though?

I guess what I was really going after was the acceptance rate.

the application takes all your grades, and then calculate the average GPA out of that. The bad thing is that it doesn't take A+ either, so all the A+ that NCSU gives will be reduced down to A. About pharmacists working at grocery stores, personally, I wouldn't mind doing that. $110k/year + slow business + grocery discount = winnar.

My mom finished pharmacy school at unc, manages a harris teeter pharmacy now. She makes very good $ there...which beats her old job filling prescriptions for inmates at central prison.

Prison pharmacist actually sounds like a pretty interesting job.

well the medical field (pharmacy, nursing, dental, opto, all the other schools) are getting much more competitive nowadays.

if she has a good GPA, good extracurricular and work experience, good scores and good references.

she should be good to go.

if she is week in one of those, make sure she can make up for it in another.

not to turn this into a protracted debate about the profession, but "pharmacist" and "interesting" aren't two words that go together in my mind

I don't know about UNC, but Campbell gets about 2500 applications per cycle, and the first year class this year is 108 students. Not sure about UNC, I know they have a bigger class and probably more applications.

Also, good PCAT scores will help a so-so GPA a lot.

Do you think those numbers are inflated since technically it can't hurt to apply from your sophomore year on?

^that might be true, but it does cost alot of money to apply, so I don't see alot of people doing it more than twice. Also, alot of people just don't apply at all because they know their grades are not good enough, why waste a few hundred dollars when you know your chance is almost none?

My boyfriend goes to Campbell and is majoring in Pharmaceutical Sciences........I also have a friend at Campbell who is a P2 in Pharm School. My beau switched majors before applying but he says it is very difficult to get into Pharmacy School....My friend who is a P2 hates life. She has tests every week and spends her nights studying.

Anyhow, good luck!

I am about to apply to pharm school here shortly. I have two engineering degrees from NCSU and am passing up 70000 a year to do this. I know a bunch of ppl in both the UNC and Campbell programs. Both programs are good. If you want to do research stuff Carolina is better but if you want the big money and work in a retail store then goto either one.

UNC pharmacy is more focused on clinical/hospital stuff. They tend to push you toward residency when you're there. If you want to do retail pharmacy, Campbell and Wingate are more focused on that. They're practically factory for CVS and Walgreens pharmacists, not there's anything wrong with that. Different schools just have different focuses.

You mention money, then mention money again.

If you plan to be a pharmacist youre obviously not doing it for the money. You know that right?

My parents are both pharmacists if you would like to speak with someone "IN THE BIZ YO". I'm being 100% serious if youre interested. They would love to save another soul.
