indeed, jackleg.

"mess" = "I picked a mess 'a beans if you want some."

"if'n" = "If'n you're goin to the store, pick me up some beer"

"you'ns" = you guys, you all, yall

'em = them

*er = adding er to any word to emphasize the importance = "nawp, funner 'n 'nat"

'n n*** = faster than he is - becomes - "faster 'n 'ne is" OR funner than that -> funner n nat

dreckly (directly, misused of course) = "He'll be comin dreckly"

I know I am southern, I am from Harnett County North Carolina but I have been told I don't always talk like a southerner.

ha did you go to harnett central?

i went to fuquay and people tell me i talk like a yankee. its bizarre. i dont think i have a twang or anything, but i never imagined i'd sound like a transplanted northerner

i always get a sideways look when i say "fixin' to" here in the midwest

i also get asked DAILY where my southern accent is its getting old. i'd make a joke about corn back at them but they all grew up in cornfields so its useless

yeah, extreme yankees would tell many average people who have almost no noticeable accent that they sound southern.... it's just the contrast from what they are used to that they are basing it on.

No I went to Western Harnett High School. A lot of people from NC ask me if I am from up North. I don't think I have an accent at all. My dad is so country grammar that he makes fun of what he calls my "sophisticated dialect." It makes me sad sometimes.
