Since about Thursday of last week I havent had any internet on my computer. I upgraded to Vista in July and havent had too many problems til now. Dell service rep came out and gave me a new motherboard and ethernet card and the problem is still the same.
In the bottom right corner when i go over the computers it says "Identifying". I think my card is trying to get an IP address but is getting blocked by something inside the computer. If somecan help me I'd be happy to throw them some cash because Id really like to keep vista instead of reformatting and putting XP back on my machine. 11/12/2007 2:11:45 PM |

vista has some bugs with hibernation that have still not been worked out.
disable hibernation on your system from the power settings, and see if you encounter the problem again.
*This is assuming that you only have this issue after coming back to the computer after a long period of time.
If this doesn't help, give us more information about what you have installed on the system, how often it occurs, and any relevant history of the machine's success connecting to the internet. 11/12/2007 2:17:09 PM |

we could add all the vista issues to the 100 other vista threads floating around.
but anyway.
try uninstalling the card then 'search for new hardware' and when it reinstalls do an ipconfig and see if your ip starts with 192 or 169. (in command) assuming you know how to do that, if not then go to run -> cmd -> ipconfig /all 11/12/2007 2:18:51 PM |

Dell sent you the parts and you installed them yourself, or did the dell guy install them on site?
is this a laptop or a desktop?
are you having this problem with wireless, or wired internet? highspeed, or dialup?

^^ok so your router isn't assigning you an IP which means you probably aren't communicating with the router. ARe you using a router? 11/12/2007 4:07:13 PM |

reboot your router and cable modem.. if it still doesn't get an address.. then change the network cable between your computer and the router... if that doesn't work.. then your router is bad.. that is if you're using a router.. 11/12/2007 6:05:17 PM |
