Here's why I think it's dying; lack of community and lack of advertising. The old-timers got to know the users (sometimes in person!), publicly affiliated themselves with the site, did crazy shit and then told us all about it, etc. Hell, didn't there use to be "wolfweb events" where people would actually physically meet and do stuff together? People used to actually know each other on here, or at least that's what I saw when I first started posting here.

Now, as some people have pointed out, the older members have since moved onto better things. There's nobody left to tell any interesting stories, now it's all just stupid daily emo rants that you can find pretty much anywhere on the internets. This place isn't a unique, tight-knit community anymore, it's a giant blog now. There's nobody promoting new people to come join our ranks, and thanks in part to shit like the racism incident a few months ago, not many people want to join anyway. TWW is looked down upon as the shit-hole of NCSU. Marko even stopped letting the t-dub wolf wear NCSU-related clothing. And so all we're left with are the trolls and and the aliases whose only idea of a good time is to anonymously degrade everybody and everything. Nobody knows who anybody is anymore. Instead of actually interacting and making new friends, all we've got left are the assholes who hide behind their IP addresses and think that they're so witty and clever when they post scat porn or deliberately make parody threads in forums aside from Chit Chat.

Bottom line: Fuck it, just kill this place already. It's only because I love this place so much that I'd rather see it put down now than see it be dragged through the mud any further. It had a good run and I wish I had participated in more of the good times, but nostalgia isn't going to fix this place. At this point, nothing can.

We really don't seem to have very many new users that stick around like they use to. It's just a bunch of us old timers.

No membership drives.
We haze the shit out of the noobs.
Don't seem to be TWW-based get togethers anymore.

what are yall considering new members? Freshman who joined this school year? People like me?

Based upon the graph up there, 07 looks to be better than 05 and 06.

Correction: regularly posting in chit chat. Sort of hard to get high post counts in classifieds, tech talk and entertainment, especially when you can't find something to buy everyday and no tv to keep up with series. I've been a looooong time lurker before I said fuck it might as well contribute. (I just like giving people the rollyeye, it almost always yields a wtf, try and see)

But anyways, yeah, this site does need some new blood I can remember hearing about it freshman year, but not so much anymore.

I just remember the good ol' days when people used to rep the site in the free expression tunnel to get n00bs and such. Maybe it's because we were all relatively the same age then and in the same experiences, but as the older members are in careers, familys, not even in NC anymore - I don't see a lot of real NCSU college kids taking our place with quality shenanigans.

^ thats pretty much my impression. the people contributing back had some say (even if minimal) in the direction of the site. everything was relatively new then, and individuals could influence certain things.

now theres no incentive for new people. the mods are entrenched and pretty much in their position for life, and new people are isolated from the older folks who spent the time developing this into the fucked up dysfunctional place we love to hate.

but don't get me wrong. it's not that i want to see a bunch of 20-yr old noobs come in and start running the show.

hence the dilemma.

i think umbrellaman summed it up nicely.

back when i was at state, i could attach a face to the username of lots of wolfwebbers. i mean, i remember being given a ride home by JohnnyTHM one night when i was really drunk, and we'd never even spoken face-to-face before that. you could post in the "tww spottings" thread and it wasn't creepy/stalkerish. you could make a "who wants bojangles" thread without it getting bombed with pictures of crispus. on a good day, you might even get a ride to bojangles. shameless padding and that stupid euphalo shit didn't fly. n00bs weren't told to stfu and gtfo until they did something to deserve it. the UT sex video was still floating around. you could actually sell shit in the trading post without getting flamed/spammed.

i don't think tdub can be saved, as it stands. i think it'll have to go all phoenix and burn before something like it can rise from the ashes.

It just needs a better rotating user base. As much fun as it was, the original user base accumulated over the first 3-4 years (makes sense for a college site) and now is both dwindling and helping to keep new users from getting anything out of the site.

If I wanted a reliable influx of new users, I'd pay maybe a hundred bucks a few times a year to get the tunnel painted and bricks chalked, stop counting posts/hide that info to keep from intimidating new users and to keep post-count from becoming a pissing contest, and ban the fuck out of anybody who entertains a handful of shitheads at the expense of everybody else.

I bet the biggest reason for the decline is just lack of advertising and getting the word out. I remember the tunnel paintings back in the day and thats how I got here.

The shit about "unfriendly environment" is speculative nonsense -- that happens on pretty much every web forum and, honestly, thats how I thought tww was in its "prime."

I think people are underestimating the value of doing the legwork to advertise. It requires someone getting up and doing something in the real world, but it is a very clear, straightforward solution. But, it's easier to theorize about some complicated problem with a complicated solution because there is no danger of anyone trying such a solution and proving the theorizer wrong.

Recommendation to any future owner: try out the simple solution first -- advertise on campus! Try the things that promise a high ROI, first, then try riskier things such as implementing new features.

Nice, I was wondering if I was nostalgic, or, if there was actually some hard data to back it up.

I will comment TWW is similar to many other Tech startup companies. Two individuals with a lot of passion and technical ability put together a unique idea, run with it for 5-10 years, sell off the business to somebody else after their passion expires and they want to move on with their lives. I may be stating the obvious, but, more of a question of how the business should be continue to operate at this point. Should it continue to stick to its roots, or, seek a different business approach? Slashdot went through a corporate overhaul recently in an attempt to stay alive; what will TWW do?

to increase post count you need a coordinated drive at NCSU

and I'm not talking about volunteering (fuck that noise)

I mean that the person who owns it need to either personally or through others (GIVE ME THAT PAPER) get the word out at NCSU

that's the ONLY way to increase the daily post count

lol i love declarations like "ONLY"

fixing/improving site functionality would have an effect too. many people came to the site for the features, and if they were fixed that would be a big help.

but yeah, you gotta get the word out too.

though i don't know i see the point in all the "getting the word out" stuff people are talking about when the current owners won't even talk to us or even return emails. so we'd be putting money in his pocket when he/they are unwilling to even perform simple maintenance on the place (much less feature improvements) to prevent all the OH SHITS.

If anything, I think it was much more brutal (especially in Chit Chat) back in the '02-'04 period.

Advertising would definitely help--I'd have never seen the site if not for the brentroad.com tunnel painting.

to get significant increase in the userbase it is the ONLY way to go about it

the website is basically functional enough... sure, it could be better, but it's pretty good (assuming I can post without bullshit error messages)

when exactly does this happen?

you can make a fucking bojangles thread and nobody is going to post crispus

you're just looking for something/someone to blame this all on

all "padding" that occurs on this board does not equal "EUPHALO"
