The manual says I would only need digital audio coax or optical audio to hookup the DVD and DVR.

What if the signal isn't always digital, wouldn't I also need to hookup the regular stereo plugs? The manual just says optional.

I would experiment but this is hypothetical because I'm trying figure out what cables to buy.

just use digital cables
