Looking at buying jeep off craigslist- 95 Jeep Wrangler s, 5 speed, 4cyl.... Supposedly, It has always ran great until recently when the kid put a 4" lift on it- Now it won't stay in 1st or 3rd unless you hold it in.

ie: When you shift into either gear so long as you are giving it gas it is fine, let off the gas and it pops out of gear....

any guesses as to how serious this may be- Pretty killer deal (but not if the effin tranny needs to be replaced)

I e-mailed that guy earlier offering to come out today. He told me someone has already committed to buying it tomorrow and he'll let me know if that changes. Is that you?

Here's something for you to think about:

The way the Aisin trannies are built, if the main output shaft bearing (in the center bearing plate) begins to go bad, you end up with a pretty serious thrust issue that will pop the tranny out of gear under certain loads, depending on the direction of thrust. This can also occur if a snap ring pops out of its groove (and is what frequently happens to fifth gear in the AX-5).

You'll notice that the problem is in either 1st or 3rd. This is because the shaft is thrust forward, but the shift fork stays in the same place, held by the detent assemblies (spring loaded detent balls in the center bearing plate.

Time for an overhaul or new tranny. Forget it.

^^ only useful garage poster.

he's exactly right, lifting/buying a lifted 4 cylinder jeep is dumb anyway.
the ax-5 can't handle it. (6 cylinders have the ax-15 which is better but still not great)
the engine will hate you and you will hate it back when a geo metro 3 cylinder passes you going up a hill or you lose 5mph going down the interstate just because there was a slight gust in head wind.
and then of course there is the crippling dana 35c pos that all pre-rubicon wranglers had and couldn't hardly stay together on road... let alone off road.

what year is it? hell it may have the Peugeot BA 10/5 transmission in it which is an even bigger pile of steaming dog doo like the 87 posted above would (if its a 5 speed). it probably doesn't though... that transmission doesn't tend to kick gears as bad... it just rolls over and dies.

no. lots of non/pre rubicon tj's had d44 rears.

i'd stay away from it unless it's one hell of a deal to counteract transmission replacement and you aren't going to count on it as a highway cruiser for power issues.

an nv1550 swap from a tj isn't terribly involved. the ax5 is junk, don't even waste your time/money on it.

once again.....

a 'trans.' or a 'transmission' is something found in an automobile.

a 'tranny' is something completely different.

AX-5 is worthless and on borrowed time from the day it rolls off the assembly line.

4cyl is ok with stock tires up to maybe 235/75s or so...woefully inadequate for highway use even with 31s.

D35 is also fairly gay.

in short, Jeeps are awesome...if you replace the entire drivetrain.
