Are there any good hunting stores in or near Raleigh besides Dicks and Wal-mart... I miss my Cabela's. I don't need anything in particular, but would like to look around. Actually I need some ammo and a handwarmer.

I thought that this was about hunting in stores.

I bagged me a clerk the other night.

Not any real hunting stores, just a couple gun shops that don't really have shit. Davi's on Capital Blvd. will probably be your best bet aside from Dicks.

.270 Federal Barnes
http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=74122

I usually shoot Rem. Core-Lokt, but I think I want to try something else.

Has anyone tried the barnes, are they worth the money? and i dont want to hear if its a good shot it doesnt matter...

in my .270 I've had best results with Georgia Arms Handloads
"precision plus"
.270 win 130gr ballistic tip

3000fps

p/n G270A 770-459-5117

they are the most accurate out of my rifle and you can tell the difference when you squeeze the trigger and only $22.00 per box

if I don't use those, I use winchester supreme ballistic silvertip

^ Where should i get them from? I' dont really like ballistic tips especially if im shooting a hog. I've had good luck with the core-lokts, i can play connect the dots at ~120yards. just wanted to try some of the new "high-tech" ammo.

lol, I just sent a PM

I always pick up a box or two at ever gun show... but I'm sure they can get you a box if you need it

for hogs I'd stick with the core lokt really

but I think teh new fusion would work or the barnes

for a shoulder shot on a hog I'd want a solid bullet rather than a BT also

I thought you were looking for a new deer round

the winchester supreme cxp 3 is a solid iirc

hornady has some stuff in that caliber thats a solid, but it's pretty high

What've you got?

I've got a T/C Encore with a 27" barrel (.270) with a 1:10" twist and I was wondering what other people had used for that.

it's not a tack driver...

it's a remington 7400 with leoupold vari x-II 3x9-40

but that GA stuff puts the best groups up compared to any other ammo I've shot... same thing with a couple of my friends rifles too

but every rifle is different so who knows what your TC really likes

yeah, its just so damned expensive to figure it out

With the black powder barrel I can shoot MOA, at least out to 100, with 2x 50g pellets and a 230g sabot.

Carolina Outdoor Sportsman on Strickland Rd. is a full fishing and hunting shop. They have an indoor bow range and full archery shop (the only one in the area). Good people.

^ Might have to run by there sometime.

Well I stopped by Dick's tonight, and bought some ammo. They had the Core-Lokt's on sale for $8 per box of 20 with the mail in rebate, you cant beat that. So i guess i wont be changing ammo soon.

This is what im shooting if you care, Browning BAR .270 Long-Trac Mossy Oak with a Leupold VX-II 3x9x50. I love it!

I've never had any issues with Hill's.
They are high dollar, but they have tons of reloading stuff in stock.

I'm gonna say it. If that's the case then you don't need anything else.

However, if you must try something new, then GO TO WALMART or Dicks.
You may have to try different Walmarts as none stock exactly the same thing.
Or go to Dicks. You will not find a better ammo selection anywhere except maybe Davi's.

"Has anyone tried the barnes, are they worth the money?"

I reload 150gr Barnes Triple Shock-X bullets in my 308 Win.
They are not worth the money.
I've tried different powders and cannot get them to shoot better than 1MOA. Mind you this is in a gun that shoots 150gr Fed Nos Ballistic Tips and 168gr Black Hills Match into 0.5MOA. The first time I tried reloading 168gr Sierra Matchkings I got a 0.7MOA 5 shot group with a starting load of Varget.
This gun can shoot. This bullet does not work in my gun. I might need to try the 165gr TSX, but at 50 cents per unloaded bullet I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.

If I needed a hog bullet the Barnes might be worth the money as they have some of the best penetration.
But, for deer they're a waste of money. You don't need a bullet that tough for deer and if you need penetration there are still cheaper options (Nosler Partition, Sierra Matchking, bonded bullets, etc).
Cheap soft point or the latest craze, dead is dead.
