I have a couple of friends who work or worked for them, and they all really enjoyed it. The impression I get though is that like any other large company, the experience depends a lot on the group or project you're put on.

haha, i don't quite get how any of you figure that Seattle is a "good location".

it's cool for a little while...not a place i'd want to live for more than a year. MAYBE 2, tops. I hate the complete lack of a summer and the daily rain.

^^ yep. large company-> large company politics, bureaucracy, inanities. MS is notorious for its fiefdom problems. Also, at the end of the day, no one can really be happy about putting out a shit product. You'd better hope you get on one of the cool things that they do.

Duke, having lived in both places i can say theres a noticeable difference in the weather of Seattle vs. Whidbey Island... and this past summer was an anomaly. just about every other year, theres a distinct summer that lasts from late May through late August, and its quite nice. i dont know what happened this year. summer sucked.

Actually I do, I live over in Phinney Ridge and commute to redmond.

I really like it for the most part. Definitely a considerable amount of big company politics, but its not NEARLY as bad as I'd read about or imagined it. What building are you in joe?

i interviewed with google last year and I have to say at least my interview process with MS was MUCH better than the one with google.

that and as good a company as I'm sure google is, as a designer at least, I have waaay more flexibility and lateral movement opportunity with MS.

thats cool. we used to live in Fremont near Phinney for the first couple years. we live in Ravenna neighborhood now, but we still have friends there, and my sister in law now has a house there. nice area. I really like Herkimer coffee (even though there's nothing really special about it -- Lighthouse Coffee has better beans), and Red Mill burgers just freakin' rocks. I also dig that little Czech pub, "Prost"... we'll should get TheDuke to come down from Oak Harbor and have a beer and a burger with us.

do you take the bus to Redmond? I'll probably start doing so, myself.

dunno what building I'll be in... its a contract position and I dont start til after Thanksgiving. they just said "$" and I just said "okay"

but to be honest, Microsoft is my "Plan B"... im working on getting an engineering position with a medical device manufacturer , but the process is so damn slow, i'll probably be about done with this contract when they're ready to move.


(PS ... to [user]everyone[/user] who said "congrats"... thanks! : ) I'm trying to act all cool and nonchalant about it, but it is actually kind of exciting.
