"Instructional supplies" is vague enough for wiggle room. But yeah you just have to make sure you're not carrying around something you don't have a good reason to have.

Obviously a fishing knife would be a little harder than an x-acto knife unless you were using it in some silly project or something.

^ Eh, the point of a knife in a situation like the one discussed earlier is more intimidation than anything else. X-acto knives don't really look all that scary.

i guess you could just carry a framing hammer in your backpack--i'm pretty sure that's legal, and it's damn-well intimidating
