taste buds

my mouth became a war zone over the last 1.5 days. what can I do? I gargled some hydrogen peroxide and my mouth fizzled all over

I bought some Anbesol, but only helps with the pain and no healing.

The canker sores are behind my tongue at the back of my mouth.

Treatment for canker sores SUCKS. Don't just gargle the peroxide, you need to directly apply it to the sores.
Take a q-tip, put peroxide on it, and rub it over the sore until you scrape all the white part off. This will hurt like a BITCH and it will bleed when you do this, but it WILL NOT heal unless you get under the white part. Then, once you have the sores "opened" so to speak, gargle salt water to clean them out. Do this 2 - 3 times a day.
This SUCKS, but it will get the swelling to go down to the point where they hurt less pretty quickly, and then they'll heal completely in 1 - 2 weeks.

^^that would suck

i read on the wikipedia that large amounts of sugars can cause them. i ate a giant bag of skittles and starbursts the other day, and chewed them with my back teeth, where the sores are

I get these things frequently. From my understanding there is nothing you can do to speed up the process of healing them because they have to heal naturally. Generally I peroxide them directly with the q tip (but I don't scrape under as someone mentioned) and I kill it with Oragel or Ambasol. It numbs it enough to be bareable. I can say there are certain foods you should certainly avoid.

I have heard if you take L Lysing (a supplement) it helps in preventing them if you get them chronically.

^ exactly the same with me since I can remember. I used to go to the doctor for the brown match looking thing, guessing that's what you're talking about. Now I just deal with them. You can get those over the counter?

It's Lysine, and it's the best thing I've found for keeping them from getting bad. You have to start taking it right when you feel a canker sore forming, or else it doesn't do a whole lot (except for helping you not get more). You get it in the vitamin section at the drugstore.

I used to get these things ALL the time, but not so much anymore.

Duke doctors developed a prescription med called "Magic Mouthwash." It is the best thing I've ever used for any type of mouth sores.

But I second the thought that you should probably try to keep your own juices out of your mouth from now on...

my gp usually prescribes corlan pellets - you apply them directly to the sores/ulcers and they clear in a few days

wtf is this shit about it will not heal unless you do that crap? I've never had one take longer than a week to heal without doing anything except maybe gargling with some warm salt water once or twice.

You have to mix peroxide with water you homos.

There is no treatment as has been said only things that can make it better, your body heals these naturally.

NC State makes a type of milk called Sweet Acidophilus. You can get it at most grocery stores, only in half gallons, although sometimes it sells out fairly quickly. (usually a purple label) I used to get mouth sores religiously, and the doctor recommended drinking this kind of milk. It is WONDERFUL in preventing mouth sores, and does help getting rid of ones you have as well. It's something to do with the bacteria in the milk, but it works great

I usually chop the white tastebuds off with a toe-nail clipper. And put Anbesol on the rest of it.

I get these bad a lot. Used to take Lysine and found that they never work. I have never found a solution that works for these, or preventing them. never heard of sugars causing these. From my research no one really knows where they come from. All I know is that I have gotten some on my mouth that keeps me from being able to eat without being in horrible pain and it sucks.

WOW, do not do that! that is crazy!

peroxide is unnecessary, and so is medicine (except anesthetic for the pain, if you like)

all you need is saturated (by boiling) salt water

seriously, I promise

The sores that last a long time are only doing so because they're being irritated

try to avoid talking, gum, playing your trumpet, chewing on that side, fellatio, etc. until healed

sauerkraut juice might work; it certainly tastes better, but I doubt it works anywhere near as well as salt

if you can't stand to gargle with saturated salt water (it is really foul)

take a couple big spoonfuls of salt, and add a few drops of water to form a paste like wet sand

take a small glob of the salt paste and literally hold it on the sore for a minute or so

either way (gargle vs. paste) repeat this many times a day

it should clear up in a few days at the most; none of this more-than-a-week crap

are these the same as those little white bumps that form on the tip of your tongue and hurt mildly bad, but are more annoying than anything? If those aren't wanker sores, what are they?

not long at all (few days) but it really seemed to help with the whole pain part of it. i had had those sores for a week or so though. i've read that it's best to start treating them as soon as they start to appear and it's possible to either stop them or clear them up within a couple days.

^^This isn't exactly a treatment, but if you get them pretty often it would be worth it to switch to a toothpaste that is free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

I used to get these bastards all the time, I would have 2 or 3 in my mouth over 50% of the time. After reading around a bit I saw the SLS free toothpaste recommendation and tried that about 2 or so years ago. Ever since then they have pretty much cleared up completely. I now only get them when I bite my lip or checks and even then they only take a few days to heal up with no special treatment, not 1 week or more like before.

Brew some tea then use the wet tea bag as a compress... just hold it there like it is dip/chew. The tannic acid has been shown to speed up recovery from canker sores.

Fry thanks for the info. I am usually pretty good about treating the sores as soon as I can see them appearing, I guess mine just don't go away as fast. It is not uncommon for them to stay as long as 2 or 3 full weeks. I didn't get a chance to try the baking soda trick last night because I didn't have any, but I'll see about that tonight.

Interesting. I was not aware of this either.

5-7 days would be an improvement. Do you swish the liquid benadryl in your mouth?

Also, does anyone know if there are over the counter toothpastes without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate like Poe mentioned? Does anyone else use it with good results? I might have to get on that.

Someone also told me taking a laxative works for clearing up canker sores. I don't really understand why that would work and to be honest, I don't want to try that.
