this is just speculation, but Willis is a guy that would fit well in the closer's role. he's got that fiery mentality that you love in a closer. if Jones struggles, maybe put him there? much like the Phillies did with Brett Myers this year 12/4/2007 6:49:51 PM |

Right now it's the Tigers and Red Sox about ten levels above the rest of MLB... well that is, if the reports are true and Santana to Boston is a done deal..
The best lineup in baseball in Detroit versus the best pitching staff in baseball (one of the best in the past quarter century IMO). 12/4/2007 7:15:39 PM |

I will tell you what....if the redsox pay the going price for cc no redsox can ever talk about Yankee spending again. They spent more in the last off season than any team....and CC is looking for 25 mil a year....that is ridiculous money. But if they do get him they will be on paper the best team in baseball bar none..... 12/4/2007 7:27:35 PM |

if you are referring to CC Sabathia, he isnt going anywhere.
CC's contract ends in 2008 and Shapiro has said that there will be an extension offer on the table for him before spring training, plus the Indians were about $16 million under their budget last year. Shapiro is too smart of a GM to let the reigning Cy Young winner get away.
I know that money talks, but I dont think CC will go anywhere 12/4/2007 8:42:29 PM |

No, they know full well what they're doing.
Their owner is a real-life version of Rachel Phelps from Major League.
Man, it sucks to be a Miami sports fan nowadays.

Except if you're actually a baseball fan, you don't say "who the fuck are these guys," you say, they've stockpiled a lot of young talent because they can't afford to overpay for veterans like Beckett, Cabrera, Willis, etc.12/4/2007 9:55:23 PM |

Ernie - well if you must know...my brother who is a Indians fan and I were just on the phone, and I had CC on my brain as I am still wondering how Beckett didn't win the Cy Young award and my brother and I were arguing over that.... so when my brother and I got off the phone I still had that fat POS CC on my mind and wala....typed CC instead of Santana....Trust me I know the difference...and I don't want the Yankees to pay him 25 mil a season was my point. They need to nurture what they have...especially now that Andy is locked up. whatever 12/4/2007 9:59:41 PM |

^ that the Tigers are now a legitimate threat to win the AL.
Which means they can win the Series by default.
Good pick up D-riot. Leyland is going to have a handful of egos in the clubhouse, but he will get it done, and I hope the best for that town. 12/5/2007 10:54:10 AM |

What I say is that the Marlins receive something like $20 million per year from the Red Sox and Yankees via luxury tax, and that they're not even going to spend all that money on their roster. I saw on an ESPN article that their highest paid player right now will be closer Kevin Gregg, making $575k.
Lets get it over with and jettison Miami to Triple-A.

Quote : | "But the Marlins? They're about as unrecognizable as any team in America -- maybe even more unrecognizable than the Pawtucket Red Sox.
"What's their payroll going to be?" one baseball man wondered Tuesday night. "Six million bucks? Eight million?"
Hey, excellent guesses. As best we can tell, their highest-paid player next season is going to be closer Kevin Gregg. He made $575,000 this season (less than the Yankees paid A-Rod every four days). And he's actually arbitration-eligible.
Or it might be Miller, even though he's only 22 years old, was pitching for the UNC Tar Heels as recently as two years ago and owns exactly 74 1/3 innings of big league experience.
Miller signed a major league contract out of college, so he's scheduled to make $1.325 million if he's in the big leagues next season, which will practically be Johan Santana money compared to the rest of that roster.
"There's no way," one agent said, "that the average salary on that team is even going to be close to $500,000."
That's the state of your 2008 Marlins, folks. Whoever they are.
We need to remember at times like this that the Marlins are a team that always makes great trades, that always makes excellent talent evaluations, that always has a plan. But we also need to acknowledge something else:
That plan now leaves them with virtually zero identity. Let's see now. There's Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla and … uh … OK, we're stumped.
And even more importantly for the future of the franchise, you wonder where this plan will leave their endless campaign for a new ballpark, now that they no longer can say they want to build it for Willis and Cabrera to lead them back to the glory days. " |

Quote : | "This has been said before but needs to be shouted on days like today. This franchise makes bundles of money. It turns a wonderful profit. Take out the calculator and add up what they got last year:
$30 million. That's in revenue sharing.
$12 million. That's an estimated local TV deal, according to a source.
$18 million. That's from the national TV deal.
That's $60 million right there. That's before they sell a ticket, sign up a corporation or cash one of the increasingly lucrative checks from the merchandising arm of Major League Baseball. That's against a $32 million payroll last year that could dwindle to about half that this year." |

Yeah, I read that article and I know about the payroll. There's no question the Marlins have shady ownership but it's a far different level than the owner on Major League (and yes, I know you didn't mean it literally). They are unloading good players, yes, but are getting very good players in return. Hanley Ramirez was the 2006 Rookie of the Year, Anibal Sanchez threw a no-hitter, Uggla/Willingham/Jacobs are all supposed to become good players. Andrew Miller is supposedly the next big time pitching badass. 12/5/2007 5:37:18 PM |
