I was looking in getting a UPS for my mac and was curious what you guys had or liked. Right now I'm looking into these two,

i have an APC and it's been great for the last 3 years or so.

you don't need that kind of rating, a cheaper UPS would do you just fine, something like 750VA-1000VA will give your mac a good 10-15min. or so

i'm looking at getting this or something similar for my server.

belkin's are awful.

i've had 2, they both lasted a couple of months (batteries).

i can only hope that their quality has gotten better.

I'm using a bunch of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842101002 on various systems at home and here at work. I've had APC and Belkin products and overall I like the APC ones better. 750va is what's needed for a desktop w/ decent specs and a good size monitor, plus some accessories. I could use a larger one on my workstation at work, but it's got 4 hdd, 2 optical drives, a damnfuckingbitchass P4e (need to upgrade to core2duo), 17" lcd, plus modem and router that need to be kept up during power blips to keep the other workstations going. Each workstation, which is just a basic p4e tower + 17" lcd, is on it's own 750va APC UPS.


Yes, we need a more robust system, but this works for what we have now in terms of workstations and users.

^that's what i have for my desktop at home, runs my C2D, 19"LCD, router, modem in case of blackout... probably gives me only 5 min. or so enough to shut down or keep me up for a minute in case the power comes back on or i blow a fuse

APC has been around far longer and done a better job at it. They aren't the cheapest, but more often than not, their crap works.

I judge a company by it's loss leader. I'm sure it's wrong to think this way, but if the cheapest product they make works well, then I can pretty much assume that their more expensive models do it better. Belkin on the other hand has shitty warranty support and quality control. So I can't say much for them.

I've got my computer running on two 900va apc's and they work great. Never had a problem.

If you had the server based 220-240v APC units, yes. They use deep cycle marine batteries. NCSU got rid of a bunch of them a while back, so you might be able to find one for a steal at the surplus place. All you would need to do is replace the batteries with similar ones and be good to go. Well that and you would need to install a 240 line/keep it in the laundry room.

so then why not on the 120v models

as long as the battery voltage is the same what is the problem? (other than it wouldnt fit)

I got a APC Back-UPS XS1500 in great condition that ill sell ya for $75. And I know it will handle your Mac plus a whole lot more!

Should PM fregac as he deals with a lot of 2nd hand used equipment. Not too long ago, he was selling some enterprise sized UPS, some had good batteries, most did not, but cheap as hell. A friend bought 2 bad units from him for next to nothing, spend like $50 bucks on new batteries on ebay and has them on his 4 servers at home. Systems like what he got would cost 300+ for just one.
