He did Judo and Jujitsu for the KGB. I remember on his visit to Japan, one of the events was him sparring with judo students.

"WASHINGTON (CNN) — Count Republican Mitt Romney among those who aren't happy with Time Magazine's choice of Russian President Vladimir Putin for Person of the Year.

In an interview with CNN's Glen Beck, the presidential candidate called the choice "disgusting."

"You know, he imprisoned his political opponents. There have been a number of highly suspicious murders," Romney said on Beck's radio show. "He has squelched public dissent and free press. And to suggest that someone like that is the Man of the Year is really disgusting. I'm just appalled."

"Clearly General Petraeus is the person, or one of a few people, who would certainly merit that designation," the former Massachusetts governor added.

Rival presidential candidate John McCain also said Wednesday he disagreed with the choice.

“I noticed that Time Magazine made President Putin the Time Magazine ‘Man of the Year,’” McCain said, according to NBC. “I understand that probably, but my man of the year is one Gen. David Petraeus, our general who has brought success in Iraq.”"

USA! USA! USA!

how fucking closed minded some people in this country are absolutely amazes me. good job general u are working hard to straighten up a country that bush fucked up. If you think about it Putin is a logical choice. The "man of the year" isn't supposed to be a super hero. The Man is someone who has and will place a major impact onto the world. If you know anything of international politics you will realize that events surrounding Russia and Putin will imprint a major impact into future world events.

The man of the year is not a popularity contest, its about the person who has changed the world the most (for better or worse) in the past year.

It's like Alberto Gonzales is the lawyer of the year (as voted by the American Bar Association). This is not saying he did a good job, he was just the most high profile lawyer this year.

By using corruption to achieve this goal?

Not just that, he's using corruption and state-run energy monopolies to accomplish that goal.

There will be a few riduckulously rich people in Russia if they tighten up the energy supply to Europe a little more and keep prices up (and keep building more of those damn gas pipelines).

I got an idea; lets ready to the troops. We can then invade Russia so in order to free and liberate there people. Rumors state that they have WMD's . Russia is also known to associate with our sworn enemy of the Axis of Evil Iran; who knows they also may have ties to Al Quaeda. As a bonus Russia also has fairly large oil reserve much of which is untapped chillin in Siberia.
