"Degand out for the season

By NC State Media Relations

Posted Dec 24, 2007

NC State head men's basketball coach Sidney Lowe has announced that sophomore point guard Farnold Degand will miss the remainder of the 2007-08 season after tearing his ACL last night in the win over Cincinnati. Degand will undergo surgery at a later date.

The 6-4, 178 native of Boston has started all 10 games for the Wolfpack at the point this season, averaging 6.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 28.6 minutes per game. He also led the team in assists (2.9 per game) and three-point shooting (.500, 8-16). Degand sat out last season after transferring from Iowa State, where he redshirted the 2005-06 campaign.

"This is a really tough break for Farnold individually and for our team collectively," Lowe said Monday morning. "After not being able to play for two years, he was really enjoying being back on the court. He will definitely have the support of his teammates and the coaching staff throughout the rehabilitation process.""

that sucks. it really should now read,

"Degand's career over"

i mean lets be honest, he has already redshirted and transferred. It's too late to get a medical redshirt for this season. He will be out for the entire season and I guarentee Sid is not gonna hold the spot for him. They may have him on the team next season out of pity, but by that point you have to assume our team will be operating under a new point guard (Javi, Marques) that the team is accustomed to.

I feel bad for the guy (although his eyes were rediculously scary looking when he would bring the ball up the court at times)

outside of Grant, he was the only other guy you could count on to show up everynight.

He was our only good 3pt shooter, he was our only true pg, he was our only good passer. Johnson is obviously horrible because he doesn't play at all and Javi plays like 15 minutes which means Javi is infinitely better and Javi is awful. It has nothing to do with him just becoming available because he's practiced with the team for a year. If he was good, Sidney would have had him out there. Lets hope to get back to the nit and win it this time.

johnson has only had like 2 opportunities to even be able to play. sidney probably didn't want to throw a kink in the mix for these 2 tough games unless we established a commanding lead or something. we'll see what johnson can do now, but i'm not too thrilled with our chances without degand. he was certainly improving and was a our best shot at having good PG play IMO.

oh well, guess this is to be expected for us by now.

^^absolutely not. that robs us of one of our key contributors on the wing. we need gavin where he is, a slashing guard that can create for himself and get to the line.

if javi/johnson can't handle the point, i think the next guy you look at is fells. however, i think fells works better off the pass as well. we really need javi or johnson to be able to step up and carry the load this year. next year we can throw mays into the mix and let him compete for the job (and likely win it).

Its not like we were knocking socks off with Degand anyway we had our work cut out for us to even make the tournament. Javi catches the ball and everything stops. He can't drive, shoot, or pass it inside to hickson as well as our other players. If he could do one of those three things it would serve us well but its 5 on 4 with him out there playing defense only.

Quote :
"sidney probably didn't want to throw a kink in the mix for these 2 tough games unless we established a commanding lead or something."

kink in the mix? its not like he's been injured. The guy has been practicing with the team for a year now. Javi is more of a kink in the mix playing with the team for a few months. Bottom line is good players play. Why would you sit a good player because its a tough game? you wouldn't. You would need him. Sidney is playing his best players. Johnson is either a. worse than Javi or b. can't play d.

[Edited on December 24, 2007 at 2:31 PM. Reason : no excuses for johnson not playing. hes not good.]

^^i would assume that they didn't want to throw him into the rotation when gonzalez/degand was starting to acceptably work. there have only been two games. i was under the assumption that johnson would get some time against western carolina (or perhaps seton hall if we were up or down by a lot). now i'm guessing he'll be playing against seton hall. if only for a few minutes to see how he sizes up against real competition. i was worried about this seton hall game before. but now i see pretty much 0% chance we'll be winning it.

Sucks for Degand. Best of luck with the rehab.

Just one more reason to hate Ohio. When did we sign on to play that 0% graduation-rate bunch of thugs?

Javi and Johnson - time to step up if you're going to be the man.

Huh? Are you talking about the play Degand got hurt on? There was hardly any contact... he just turned his leg and... pop.

Yeah, everyone on PackPride keeps screaming about Degand getting hurt on a dirty play or something. He just planted his foot and his knee buckled...shit happens.

what i saw was Degand plant his foot and his knee buckle as he was going to the rim, then the Cincy player came across Degand with his arm in an attempt to knock the ball away, which resulted in Degand tumbling to the floor. Nothing really dirty, just a typical foul on a fast break where the defender goes for the ball but misses and the driving player loses control and his feet (which was aided by Degand's knee buckling). The tear to the ACL looked like it came before the foul. I knew it was probably worse than a sprain when I saw Degand back on the bench talking to his teammates. I read his lips and it looked like he said something about feeling a pop in his knee.

I was sitting three rows back directly from where it happened and it was obvious to me that it was more than just some bruising.

Here's to hoping for a quick recovery and that it's nothing more than an ACL.

Just to be clear - I didn't see anything on that foul that was out of the ordinary. Degand planted his foot and the knee couldn't take the strain. Shit happens, and it was by no means an intentional or dirty foul. Cincy was hacking all night long, but nothing flagrant that I could tell. I did want to smack that european cracker by the end of the game though.

Again, best of luck with the recovery. He's going to get better attention than most of us would get in the same situation.

The shit's on now - how the team reacts in the next game or two will determine the rest of the season, IMO.

At least we're not losing our most important guy (Atsur) out of only 6 that played, like last year. Our offense still revolves around getting J.J the ball in the post and slashing and kicking it out. If anyone knows how to better this problem, I would certainly have to say it would be the point guard that won the '83 championship. (Sid. Lowe- for you idiots)

I would argue that Javi is a much better defensive player than Degand^

He does make some questionable decisions on offense, though.

Degand was only just starting to run a good offense, javi does his job out there and now can only get better. i think the play of johnson or whoever we decide to put in as a back up point guard is going to determine our season. Degand statistically was not great, he ran the offense yes, but not always the most effectively and was only just starting to score any more than 5 points a game for our team. Again, we have been in worse situations when atsur was out, we learned to play without him, and i think we will be fine.

^^^Did you see our team with Atsur and without Atsur last year? The difference was like night and day.

I do like Javi's instincts on defense though. I always see him in the passing lanes and getting his hands on a few tips here and there. If he can improve on his decision making, we'll be straight. But he's still only a true freshman. We're going to go through some growing pains. Costner, Grant and Fells will all have to help with the ballhandling.
