Article on QB Brett Mooring. He'll be camping with us and his high school head coach is a "hardcore NC State fan". Let's hope that if Bible likes him, he'll commit when he camps like Glennon did.

http://ncstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=815094

Quote :
""It makes the game a lot easier when you have to fit it in tight places because the ball is moving a lot faster and it's harder for the defense to catch to," Mooring said. "I have broken one of my receiver's, he broke two of his fingers on a fade comeback route. I was rolling out and just broke them, right in the middle.""

Mooring threw for 2,721 yards and 19 touchdowns while completing 190 of 376 passes. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder is about to begin his third year as a starter at quarterback.

I think the mandatory TD/Int ratio for NC State quarterbacks is 1:1, so probably around 19 +/- 1. If it were any less than that, our games wouldn't be as exciting as they are now because we would win all the time.

Wow we offered Hawatha Bell? That's pretty recent then. Just a week ago Scout listed him as not having an offer from us. I know early on he really liked VT and USC-East, and it looked like he was going to commit to one of the two, but that all changed and he became open again. I guess we felt like we had a good enough chance with him to offer. It'd be nice to really establish ourselves in the Charlotte area, where some of the best high school football in the state is played. We've done better as of late there, but still haven't become big enough there to really lock up the absolute best players.

Charlotte Metro area players (4* or higher) that we missed on recently:
2006
Brandon Spikes - UF

2007
Ryan Houston - UNC

2008
Robert Blanton - ND
Spencer Adams - CU

2009
Devonte Holloman - CU

Charlotte Metro area players that we have gotten recently:
2007
Steven Howard - ***
Henry Lawson - **
J.R. Sweezy - **
Justin Byers - **

2008
R.J. Mattes - ****
Dwayne Maddox - ***
Mario Carter - ***
Andre Wallace - ***
C.J. Wilson - **

Some guy on the Swamp Gas forums says his sources say Xavier Nixon is a Florida lean.

Again, these are some guy's "sources" on a "UF" bbs so take it with a grain of salt but hey, if it wasn't for speculation, these recruiting threads wouldn't be as much fun.

South Carolina newspapers have the best recruiting news. Why can't our locals follow suit? Luckily, we share recruiting territory and get tidbits of info every now and then.

http://www.thestate.com/sports/story/428591.html

Greg Pratt has offers from Indiana, N.C. State, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Troy and he’s favoring Cincinnati.

Old news, but D.J. Swearinger likes USC, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia and Michigan with Auburn out front.

We are pushing the hardest for Kinsman Thomas who has also has offers from USC, Clemson, Vanderbilt, Illinois and North Carolina

Again, old news, but Jheraine Boyd is going to trim his list to 10 by the end of the month and to 7 by the start of football season. His recruitment may be one of those that go on into the winter months.

Old news but Alex Wulfeck is definitely camping with us. I hope he impresses some people up there because we desperately need a solid kicker. I also hope his last name is a good indicator of where he belongs a la Earl Wolff.

So apparently we have only 16 available scholarships if everyone returns that can. 3 of those spots have already been taken by Slay, Dowdy, and Cheek. Now lets try to guess how the rest of the spots fill out. I think a fourth spot has to go to Zach Greene. I just think the guy has to be a lock to us. So theoretically 12 spots are left. We need a punter and a kicker, and we should always get a quarterback and a running back in every class. So that leaves 8 spots. We'll then sign at least one o-lineman (plz 2 be Nixon), one defensive end, and one WR. That leaves 5 spots. How would we divide those 5 spots up?

DT - Slay
OLB - Dowdy (even though he's listed as a DE I think he'll be moved to OLB)
MLB - Cheek
CB - Greene
K - ?
P - Wulfeck?
QB - Whoever gets the offer out of camp
RB - Pratt or someone that emerges from camp, perhaps local Apex product Kevin Fogg
OL - Nixon would be the dream get
DE - I have no idea who
WR - Boyd would be the dream get here

I've heard that Roy Mangram might not make it this year and have to work on his academics. Word is he might enroll at Georgia Military College where Leroy Burgess went. That really sucks if true. He is a hard hitter and will be valuable to us once he gets here.

I hope that we sign at least 2 DEs. We have a ton of upperclassmen and relatively few young guys/impact players at the position.

I figure that there will probably be more than 16 available scholarships but I'll play the game. No whammy, no whammy, STOP!

QB - 1
RB - 1
WR - 2
TE - 1 (Another need for quality depth)
OL - 3
DE - 2
DT - 1 (Slay)
LB - 2 (Cheek, Dowdy)
CB - 2 (I don't like to assume anything until they at least commit, let alone keep the commitment and sign)
K - 1 (I wouldn't want to take more than 1 a class)
-----------------------------------------------------
16 schollys, if my math is correct

16 seems a little low but I assume it's correct because I don't know the scholarship count. I hope TOB can reel in some quality with the few spots available.

Interesting, WR Justin Brown isn't going to camp anywhere this summer. I guess if you have offers from all the schools you want offers from, there's no need. I thought the point of camp was to get a little taste of what the offense is like for each team but I'm really just guessing so if anyone knows, please verify.

Nate says it's 16 so I buy it now. Maybe with a class this small, we can focus more on the 2010 kids (*cough* Robert Crisp *cough*) but probably not much more because I assume it's still a ton of work evaluating hundreds of 18 year olds, no matter how many you're bringing in.

They probably just sort by the five school icons listed beside the prospects name. Here's a quote at the bottom of the Notes section on Xavier's profile.

Quote :
"Holding approximately 40 scholarship offers (May 2008, GatorCountry.com). 2007: AP All-State selection. Also considering North Carolina, N.C. State, West Virginia, South Carolina. Also recruited by Georgia, Penn State, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Ohio State..."

So we are there... just hidden in the footnotes. That's what NC State athletics is all about.

Good Sterling Lucas Article

http://www.thetandd.com/articles/2008/06/11/sports/doc484f55e968aef176123703.txt

I never knew the football program did this, although it makes perfect sense that they would.

Quote :
"His answer — yes — came with a boost of confidence in the mail. Shortly after the ink dried on their national letters of intent, the books and videos arrived. They were thick, bound volumes of workouts scheduled by week.

Lucas got his from NC State. Harrison got his from Coastal Carolina. It was their key to bridging the gap between high school and college football as best they could before actually stepping onto campus as full-time student athletes. Without having actually been in the program yet, it was their best chance to make their dreams a reality."

By my count (current roster + koyal george getting a scholarship), if all our recuits make it in and no one leaves the program or gets kicked off, we have 15 to give for next year. There's been talk that Leroy Burgess, Roy Mangram, and/or Marty Everett might have some trouble getting in, so 16-17 is probably a good guess for the moment.

I'm pretty sure that Leroy Burgess will arrive. Roy Mangram though may not be able to get in. Word is he might end up going to Georgia Military College to work on his academics. Merci Falaise is on staff there as a graduate assistant O-line coach.

Thomas Locust is the DT we're worried about not getting in, along with Marty Everett. Not Leroy Burgess. Burgess is in.

The 3 that might not make it are Mangrum, Locust and Everett.

It seems weird that we'd recruit a JC player that didn't have the grades to get in. You would think that'd be the first thing you look at before a scholarship offer.

WRAL article on DB Zach Greene

http://www.wral.com/sports/prepsports/story/3026630/

Quote :
"In April, Greene's father Dwayne, told WRAL in April that he expects his son to make a decision by the end of the summer. "That way he can enjoy his senior year," his father said.

Coach Green reiterated that information in April as well, saying "[Zach is] not going to do the full gamut of recruiting."

Greene received an offer from N.C. State in January. When WRAL spoke with Dwayne Greene in April, he said that his son was leaning towards the Wolfpack."

Just b/c he doesn't have an offer listed on Scout doesn't mean that those schools aren't recruiting him. Some may like what they've seen on his highlight film but want to see him in person at camp, and then will offer if they like him. Besides those lists aren't even always up to date. Ryan Cheek had an offer from us and at one point Scout took us off his list of schools, even though we were in his top 3 at the time. Heck until this interview no one outside of the coaching staff knew we were recruiting Washington and we still aren't on his lists on Scout and Rivals. Remember we weren't even on JJ Hickson's list until a couple of months before he decided on where he was going.

FWIW Washington is rated a 3* prospect and ranked the #47 RB nationally on Rivals.

Hey with a QB with the rep that Glennon has who knows how good we could be in the future. I remember the quote. Ricky Dowdy basically said that with TOB & Co.'s recruiting and if they can lock up a lot of the talent in NC then we could win the ACC, make a BCS bowl, and perhaps even have a shot at a national championship. Now winning a national championship would be pretty tough to do, but who's to say that by the time Dowdy is a junior or a senior that we won't have the ball rolling enough to win the ACC? We have a very good staff that are great talent evaluators and get the most out of their players. Heck just look at how they outperformed a lot of other schools in the ACC that had better facilities, more built in recruiting advantages, and supposedly more talent according to the recruiting rankings while they were at BC. In their first two years they had back to back 4 win seasons, but by the third year they won 8 games and after that consistently won 8+ games. I think by year three Pack Nation will be very happy with our results.

Is Glennon the biggest QB recruit we've ever had based on hype and scout rankings? The only one that I can think of that may rival him in terms of hype is Roman Gabriel. Philip Rivers wasn't highly rated coming out of high school and was mainly scouted as a tight end prospect.

What a damn pessimist you are. We might not have as good a chance that a top-tier football program has but you at least have to aim big. Look at Kansas, Missouri, and BC last year. Do you think anyone outside of their own camps had them down as national championship contenders? No, but they were a game or so away from being there. If you don't tell your kids you think they could contribute to a team that has the opportunity to win it all, why would they even bother trying?

All right, back to recruiting stuff

S E.J. Banks trimmed his listed to 4 or 5. The interesting thing is he's the cousin of Christian Wilson, who signed with UNC last February. Hopefully we'll see his list soon.

Scout has David Sims listed as a safety, but we are recruiting him as a RB

Edit: Wanted to add that he visited Minnesota last week which was his second visit in the last two months. They might be the team to beat for this one.

Well we could have certainly used a mobile QB the past couple of years with our terrible o-line.

I think relatively few QBs are actually "dual-threat" QBs. Mostly because to be a d-t, you have to be able to know when to run and also possess an arm that can complete the passes when need be. Most can do one or none well. Besides, our last two dual-threats, stone and greco, didn't work out too well and the jury is still out on wilson.

Follow up on EJ Banks. I mentioned he cut his list recently. OSU and ND are his favorites with WVU and VT making the cut. It turns out he's the cousin of former OSU WR Joey Galloway, so that might be an indication of where he's headed.
