We have offered LB Ryan Cheek. He came to visit one of our practices last Thursday and received an offer before he left. TOB is keeping his Ohio connections, which will be good for us. Ohio is one of the best states for football prospects. Michigan, unadmittedly, has historically lived off of Ohio talent. Desmond Howard being perhaps the most notable of them. I'd probably rank that state after Florida, Texas, and California in terms of talent.

^^so how does that work? did he bring tape with him on his visit and TOB offered a scholarship after viewing it? it just seems weird that he visited, watched a practice, and left with a scholarship offer.

Well the likely scenario is that his high school coach sent in a tape of him or one of TOB's connections in Ohio said hey you've got to check this kid out and got the staff a highlight tape. TOB and the staff watched it, were impressed and sent the kid a letter (although emails are quicker, a professional letter with the block S logo and TOB's signature impresses more). They probably then called him and invited him down to watch a practice, see the school, and meet with the coaches. From there the defensive coaches and TOB met up, talked about what kind of first impression he gave and decided to extend an offer.

Kids don't just show up at BCS D-IA schools' practices and say hey I'm a football player, give me a scholarship offer. You usually have to be invited to come to a practice since they are closed to the public. Now Markus Kuhn is an exception. Him and his father came to the US, walked into the offices of Virginia, NC State, and others and said hey we'd like to speak with some coaches about coming to play for this school. When you are the kind of physical specimen that Kuhn is, you past the eye test pretty quickly. I think the secretary at the Murphy Center reportedly phoned the coaches and said something to the effect of "umm...you've got a very large German out front that would like to speak with you about playing football." The coaches were impressed with his physical dimensions and I think Kuhn and his father then they gave the coaches at the schools they visited some highlight tapes. So in effect we didn't recruit Kuhn, he recruited us.

Ryan Cheek the linebacker that's from Ohio (and looks the part ) was back in town for the spring game as well. That was a quick return. Perhaps a commitment is on the horizon?

The other one that they talked to was WR Jheranie Boyd, the #26 ranked WR nationally by Scout and the #60 ranked overall player on Rivals Top 100. Definitely the best WR in the state. I'm sure it didn't hurt our chances with him that Jerricho Cotchery and Torry Holt were there.

DB Rashard Smith visited for the second time this past weekend when he was in attendance for the Red & White game. He had previously visited State for Junior Day. Smith hails from Dublin High School in Dublin, GA. Dublin High may sound familiar to many of you. We were able to get current State linebacker Thomas Barnes out of Dublin High. Could be a good pipeline for us in the future. He plays on both sides of the ball for Dublin at QB and DB. Smith has offers from UNC and Wake, yet he lists them as low interest. I like him already. Smith also plays on Dublin's basketball team as a PG. Here's a youtube video of him in action on the court. Maybe he could walk-on.

^^^boy, i wish they could have made that video a little smaller, it was stretching the boundaries of my browser

I wasn't overly impressed with his tackling ability, but he's got great speed. We could bring him in when ever we wanted to run options. He also seems to shed blocks really well and looks good in coverage. If TOB wants him, that means he's doing something right.

^^^ If we don't land Zach Greene then there is something seriously wrong. He has so many connections to NC State with his father playing for State in the early 80s, his mom also being an alum, and him playing on the same high school team as Coach Bible's son.

Well for some reason I posted some recruiting info that I meant to post in here in the countdown thread. So I will repeat it here.

Something I just found out is that Jheranie Boyd is working out with a speed coach. His speed coach is former Wolfpack tailback Tremayne Stephens.

DE Johnson busy with unofficials

Interest is picking up for Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park defensive end Brian Johnson. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder has taken a couple unofficial visits already and is hearing from a number of other schools.

“I went to South Carolina’s junior day recently,” he said. “They didn’t offer yet because they don’t know what position I’ll be. They want to see me work out in person and see me run. There’s a chance I could get the offer after that.

“I also went up to East Carolina, but I haven’t heard from them. North Carolina State says they are going to offer me, I’ve been talking to them since my sophomore year.”

Plenty of other schools are interested in Johnson including Clemson, Illinois, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Louisville and Tennessee.

Johnson plans to take a number of other visits in the near future for spring games including East Carolina, South Carolina and NC State.

Is there an early favorite for Johnson?

“I’ve always been a Florida fan, but they haven’t shown me interest,” he said. “North Carolina State has been another school I’ve liked since I was little. I like Mario Williams and Manny Lawson. Now they’ve got Tom O’Brien and he graduates most of his players. I like the stadium and atmosphere up there too.”

Plenty of colleges are interested in the Charlotte prospect. What does he want in a school?

“Of course I want a great degree. I want to go into political science,” (don't we have a really good PS program, especially with the capitol just down the street) he said. “I’ll look at the program, coaches and atmosphere. I don’t want to ride the bench. I’m trying to come in and play. I want to be productive.”

Last season Johnson registered 78 tackles, six sacks, 10 hurries, two fumble recoveries and two blocked kicks as a junior last season.

“I got stronger and faster last year,” he said. “I was much more disciplined and my pass rushing skills were better. I worked really hard in the weight room in the spring and summer and became a whole new player.”

ok, this is very true. i was only talking about how brass said greene had so many connections to state that he'd be surprised if he didn't come here. moss and collins had a lot of connections too, but that didn't stop them from turning to the dark side.

Eh, if we land either Sam Montgomery, Jason Ankrah, or Duane Chisolm I'd be happy.

Wake just got Mike Olson, who's also on Stone Bridge's team. So he may have influenced Thompson's decision. Thompson is probably closer to Olson than Slay, since Slay just moved up there from Georgia the other year. Should be great though for all of them. They get to play against each other (well they won't actually get to face off since all three play defense) every year.

We're in LB Ryan Cheek's Top 3.

Here's Ryan's ESPN page.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=56262&season=2009

Evaluation

Cheek is a good-looking athlete showing fine skills as both a running quarterback and hard-hitting inside linebacker. He possesses adequate height and a strong, sturdy body. Utilizes his thickness well filling his inside run gaps with good power. Difficult to turn this kid when he steps up with momentum. Can redirect and mirror ball carriers well between the tackles. Good diagnosing skills with very few false steps. Strong tackler who drives through from his hips and shows good upper-body strength dragging down defenders when chasing. Pursues well laterally but is better attacking vertically. Shows good explosiveness and acceleration closing on the perimeter. Great blitzer with his timing and initial burst. For a thicker linebacker, he displays good hips, turns and athleticism in coverage. However, he does not always look real fluid mirroring ball carriers in space with his compact frame, and he lacks the height and long, rangy body sought-after in an outside 'backer at the next level. On the inside, he locates the ball quickly but struggles at times slipping under the cutoff block. Will need to work on leverage and shedding with better hand technique to beat bigger linemen consistently at the college level. Physical upside maybe limited and his current size and speed measurables on paper don't blow you away. With that said, this kid is all over the football field and just has a nose for finding the ball and making plays. Non-flashy, blue collar, sound linebacker that gets it done and should continue to do so at the next level. Potential sleeper in this linebacker class.

(sounds like a Stephen Tulloch type player. a guy that overcomes not having the desired physical elements through sheer determination and just knowing where to be at the right time.)

Notes

2007: Division 1 second team all-state selection as a junior.
