I just built a new system and was wondering if I should install XP pro or vista home premimum. I've been on a 100 sites showning the advantages of XP over vista but is it really that pronounced? It seemed most of the game framerate issues is due to dx10 and if you ran the game under dx9 it ran within 5% of the XP fps. In the past I've been a mac user mainly and just would like to hear your opinion.
My basic system is: Intel E6750 duo-core evga 680i mboard 8800gt 512 graphics card
I am going to be playing games but also it is my main home system for standard junk.
Let me know your opionion on it!
Thanks,

XP.
Vista is a hole fucking hell of a lot slower... but even more important than that is that it crashes entirely too much, even by MS standards.

^summed it up right there.
depends on the games you'll be playing and if they we're written for DirectX 10 or not and if you care or not.
best performance for a directX 9 based game will ALWAYS perform better under XP, i play battlefield 2 too much, and because it performs so much slower and crashes in Vista, i stick with XP for gaming and dual-boot Vista for the couple DX10 games i like to play
best graphics are with directX 10 which are ALWAYS better in Vista
i'd say across the board - productivity/gaming/general-use, XP is the way to go
although Vista SP1 is around the corner

buy a mac
but that said, XP, there are only a few games for dx10, and after seeing the "differences" it's a pretty minor overall improvement, you'd have to have a high end computer on a bigger screen for it to matter at all. vista is a bitch 1/2/2008 1:42:53 PM |

Actually I was going to buy a Mac but they pissed me off when they put in a $100 graphics card in a $1800 imac. So I just built my own this time, of course we'll see how it will go.
When you dual boot both XP and Vista is there a nice login screen to select or is it like grub in linux?
And thanks for all the info! 1/2/2008 1:53:22 PM |

Vista was fine for me
As is XP.
If you want to put up with occasional headaches for visual fluff, do vista. If you want pure performance, XP. 1/2/2008 1:57:46 PM |

though vista sp1 is almost ready (and can be found in beta form), so maybe that will help some. 1/2/2008 2:04:20 PM |

just a little selection after the bios screen that gives you x number of seconds to select one or the other1/2/2008 2:14:15 PM |

before sp1 for vista comes out, go XP
vista has been way more trouble than it's worth IMO...sp1 would be my stipulation 1/2/2008 2:17:54 PM |

if you buy a vista machine pre-SP1, will it be free to upgrade when SP1 comes out? 1/2/2008 2:24:18 PM |

^ i think he was being an ass, implying that upgrades, for example, from 10.4 to 10.5 are nothing more than a "paid service pack".
Service Packs for both Windows and OS X are always free and considered product maintenance. 1/2/2008 4:44:17 PM |
