Who actually buys them???
Went to one of their shops with a buddy. He's a new entrant to hi-fi and has convinced himself from the outset that Bose is the pinnacle.
They've got to be the sleaziest company on the planet. I have never seen such shameless puffing up and outright lying by a floor salesman, nor have I ever seen such grossly overpriced products. I wanted to shower afterwards. Convinced my buddy not to buy, though. 1/5/2008 11:54:31 PM |

People love Bose because their store demos are very impressive for the n00bs. And for people who want a plug 'n' play audio system (old people with lots of disposable income), they are actually good for this purpose. 1/6/2008 12:13:03 AM |

sorry. I still laugh at the commercial where the guy says "people are just BLOWN AWAY when they compare their TV speakers to Bose speakers."

yeah.... unfortunately, my mother-in-law fell for the physically impossible "Bose 2 speaker 'surround sound' system" and bought it for my Father-in-law for christmas.... 2 speakers that you place right beside the TV for "surround sound"? i don't think so.... 1/6/2008 12:21:28 PM |

my parents got a bose surround sound system back when i was a kid, but there's really not any difference between it and my $400 sony system that i can tell.
sort of off topic, but does hdmi really make a big difference for sound as well? i've got an older receiver that doesn't support it, so is it worth upgrading to? 1/6/2008 3:51:26 PM |

anyone have any experience with the noise canceling headphones they advertise constantly? 1/6/2008 5:22:36 PM |

^ Yes. They colorize the sound to high hell. To be fair, all noise-cancelling headphones do, but these truly are something...special. 1/6/2008 7:09:43 PM |

I had the quietcomfort3 headphones. They are pretty good. But if I ever buy $200++ headphones, (I got the qc3 as a gift), I would get sennheiser. Better quality, less expensive.

How is that physically impossible?
Grab a set of headphones (MUST use headphones), plug them in to your computer, and visit this site: http://onemansblog.com/2007/05/13/get-your-virtual-haircut-and-other-auditory-illusions/
Scroll down to virtual haircut and click the "play" button.1/6/2008 9:13:37 PM |

Bose makes some really good sounding stuff
but you end up paying for the name in a big way...other companies make better stuff for the same or less money...but the unwashed masses don't know JBL and JL from JVC. 1/6/2008 11:23:07 PM |

jl doesn't make anything but subs for home theater right now.
Bose uses inferior drivers placed in computer designed boxes to sound decent.
Its all marketing but seriously if you want to know hhow good they don't sound.. go to the bose store and hear their demo.... then come to my house and watch transformers with me.
As said above.... no highs no lows just bose.
The metallic sounds of them transforming won't sound right and the weird sound array they use for the cannon fire won't sound right on the bose system. 1/7/2008 6:50:10 AM |

mhum..... cute. might as well call that "introduction to stereo effects and volume modulation"
I suppose a 2-speaker surround sound system could work if one person sat directly in the middle of the speakers. But this is the Bose system they bought, i think http://tinyurl.com/36jlg2 Look at the bogus description of how they achieve the "surround sound experience"
Quote : | "TrueSpace® surround digital processing circuitry Delivers a multi-channel surround sound experience with a broad, spacious soundstage and strong center imaging from just two visible speakers." |
here's the marketing bullshit for how TrueSpace works http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_STATIC_PAGE_EVENT&url=/popup/tech_details/pop_techmod_321.jsp The main problem is it make a lot of assumptions of how rooms are set up, speakers are arranged, and seating arrangements are made that just cannot be properly predicted or anticipated1/7/2008 8:34:44 AM |

is that bad? i mean, my mom's had cutco knives since as long as i can remember (more than 20 years at least), and they're pretty damn good knives (i use henkels)1/7/2008 10:06:54 AM |

^ from what I read in the Knife Thread (i don't know anything about cutco), it sounds like Cutco and Bose are brands that market themselves as high class and a step above the rest, and people buy them as such, but "truly informed" people or "true audiophiles/true knife-o-pihle" or whatever (or just elitists) "know the truth" about them.

I don't know why people hate on them so much. They may not sound the best, but they sure don't sound like shit.
I've got the Lifestyle 48 in my bedroom, and for what I use it for, it sounds great and the speakers are very tiny, which was part of the motivation for getting it in the first place since the bedroom doesn't have as much room in the living room.
I haven't yet purchased anything for the living room yet (still have a pair of Klipsch Heresys that are doing fine for now), but I doubt it will be Bose since I have more room.
^ I completely agree with what ^ and ^^ said. Is a company really at fault for saying they produce good products? Bose probably wouldn't be in business if they said "yea, our speakers are tiny, but they don't sound as good as _____________."] 1/7/2008 10:23:40 AM |
