It seems my kid got transfered to work at a gas station on Beryl Rd. (between State and Meredith). Anybody know anything about it or the other ppl that work there? 1/6/2008 5:34:27 PM |

Isn't working at a gas station one of the most dangerous jobs next to being a cabbie?
The store is located near the State Fairgrounds. I seem to remember a story from a few years back about a "disabled vet" in a wheelchair that panhandled there. Turns out he wasn't actually disabled. Had a car, cell phone, etc. Plus he could walk b/c someone saw him pissing in the bushes once.
That's all I got. 1/6/2008 5:56:38 PM |

a) It's a gas station. The rest should be able to be inferred. 1/7/2008 11:12:43 AM |

You mean in a city/placing you as a target of crime? OSHA doesn't list it as high as many other occupations.
My dad works 3rd shift at a gas station near campus. He's only been assaulted once since...2004? 2005?, and never robbed. RPD actually keeps a close watch on his store at night, and the others near him, but I don't know if that's due to it being night and a gas station, proximity to campus, or because of the crackfiends in the neighborhoods nearby.
Troop, what shift is your kid working?

Eh...I'd work at one. I know I'm not exactly a frail, timid woman, but I really don't see the problem with working at one if the pay is good (and it can be) and you feel safe.]1/7/2008 11:14:23 AM |

For topic fodder.
I can only advise and/or encourage. I worked at a gas station years ago (Foymart) and it's not exactly my choice for the kid.
I figured I'd let it play out and see how it goes before I advise and/or encourage anymore. I also figured that being that close to campus, you people would be able to give me the inside scoop about it's current status.

First. Don't know how often they change shifts...if they do it at all.
Thanks for the serious input guys and gals.

oh wait...n/m. I was thinking of a different gas station.
All the crackheads from the projects, Method Rd, etc. are going to be going to the Crown, Hess, and 76 stations around Hillsboro/Western.
You've got to consider that it is close to I-40 and the beltline, so there is a potential for robberies. Still, I wouldn't be overly worried.
Isn't Foymart between Raleigh and Rocky Mount on I-64? I've been there before I think.
