Hit Lake Johnson today to test out some new lures and the new reel I got for Christmas....

They were closed for painting and couldnt rent a freaking boat.... ended up on the t-dock going with some old spinner flies and caught 3 tiny largemouth... like <8" tiny...

So my first fishing exploits of 2008 were failed how about anyone else?

Hooray for cold ass water... 57 degree F at the t-dock also...

thinking bout rolling with the Penn 850ssm 7ft. combo then buying a 10ft. ugly stick for surf and pier fishing... sound like a decent setup? I'm sure the rod I get w/ the penn is complete shit, considering the 850ssm alone is $139 and with the rod is $149 I just figure an extra 7ft. pole for $10 couldn't hurt right?

you don't need a 10 ft rod for pier fishing unless it's gonna be an anchor rod for a king rig, which i highly doubt

and ugly sticks are shit. they're ok for the money and if you're just generally fucking around, i guess. on any of my inshore stuff, i spend as much/more on my rod than on my reel. if you can't feel the bite, you're never gonna really need the reel in the first place.

^ yeah I could use the 7ft. pole in the combo for pier fishing...but the 10ft. for shore casting to deep spots when catfishing/surf fishing

and no offense, but you're about the first person I have EVER heard shit-talk an ugly stick...that must speak to your higher caliber/wallet of fishing...but in your defense I know what you're talking about as far as fishing shallow for sheepshead...they barely hit and if you don't feel their famed "nibble" then you're out of luck!!

you know it depends on what you are fishing

you dont use a finesse worm on a baitcast reel and ugly stick, youd use something like a rattle trap

it all depends on what you are fishin and when and how fast/deep whatever...I have about 10 different rods when I go fishing...all designed for different types of bait

ugly sticks are fine if you just fish once or twice a month. if you get serious you'll want to check out some nicer stuff. those penn spinning reels like you posted are pretty good, even by my standards. Tica makes some awesome graphite surf rods. for catfishing i don't use anything but 6500 ambassadeurs on med-heavy 7 ft rods. if you want some serious saltwater spinning tackle, check out quantum's cabo or boca. i have a cabo 20 on an all-star 7 ft med action and it's a trout/flounder/red drum slayer.

my main problem with those ugly sticks is the tip they claim is so wonderful. it's a different material and that causes a discontinuity in the rod. i want the same blank from tip to reel seat. they're also a composite. i try to stay away from any of the composites. all graphite is the way to go.

check into some higher end brands. for only maybe $40 you can make your trips much more enjoyable.

i'm not trying to be a dick or anything. seems that folks see ugly stick commercials during bill dance outdoors where the kid sticks it in a ceiling fan and his dad is all reminiscing about his first ugly stick and people think it's just the shit. btw, that touching the tip to the butt of the rod to show how flexible/tough the rod is doesn't work. we tried with a light action one-piece ugly stick and it broke before it even got close.

dunno bout the once or twice a month thing, but if you have the money and wisdom to fish with all-star rods, that says a lot...very nice poles...

I THINK the reason the tips are made of a diff material is b/c the tip responds better to fast twitch associated with light bites to the bait, or say your spinning bait grazing a rock or slipping over a downed branch...that being said graphite is amazing when it comes to fishing poles...I had a berkley all graphite mated with a pflueger and it was simply amazing for bass fishing...but I broke the pole (and cried) and haven't had the time/money to reinvest

point taken though, and this isn't entertainment or tech talk so it's NEAR impossible to get flamed on something in a fishing thread...or at least it should be!!

Tica's are pretty sweet. I have a 12' Tica and it's lightweight yet extremely durable. And I've never had any issues with ugly sticks.

i find it hard to believe that solid fiberglass tip would let me feel subtle bites/rocks/bottom better than my all-star. i think it's mostly a gimmick. i fish fireline on that thing and it's unbelievable. we'll be easing along a creek with the trolling motor looking for some oyster beds that are holding trout/reds and i can tell when where the oyster bottoms are and where the mud bottoms are just by bouncing a grub across the bottom.

I'm the other way around. I can find a great rod for $100, but a good real is going to be much more expensive. You can fight a fish on a piece of bamboo if you need to, you just can't reel it in! A reel should last a lot longer than a rod, especially light tackle stuff. I go to a fishing flea market every year and all the guides sell their rods after a season but keep the reels. Especially offshore, reels are $500+ (good quality) and rods are half that; there are exceptions however. Now I'm not saying don't skimp on a rod, because you shouldn't, but you need to find a rod that feels good to you and that isn't always the most expensive. Buy what you can afford and enjoy it while it lasts; I can't tell you how many rods I've stepped on, dropped, loaded to the ocean, or have snapped mid fight. Just this past season I had a rod snap during a fish and just had someone clip off the broken half and I landed the fish.

i guess it really depends on what kind of fishing you're doing. i fish for speckled trout mostly and the way the bite is it doesn't matter what kind of reel you have because you'll never get to use it if you don't have a good rod that will let you feel the bump. i know what you're talking about though.

I do a lot of striper fishing and have to use super sensitive rods for jigging structure and that can be found in a $100 rod like a St. Croix.

ultrlight too. 6 lb test on a 5'6" ultralight slow action tica rod. it was a blast to catch those 3 lbers.

you'd be surprised. they're pretty famous in eastern north carolina for putting up an awesome, fast-running fight on light or ultralight. the shad run is sort of signifies the "fisherman's new year" in eastern nc. kinda the same way dove season is new year for hunters. they're really a blast. solid muscle because they swim against current most of their lives. i'm taking the boat down the river for some on sunday i think.
