these accusations are brought forth almost every week, but if you'll actually read the letters the excerpts are from (the ones that he actually wrote). He is, in many cases defending the plight of the groups mentioned and illustrating how the broken system forces things to be they way they are.
When you tell it like it is, criticism is construed from every direction. 1/8/2008 4:19:28 PM |

And this is Ron Paul's official statement on the matter:
Quote : | " January 8, 2008 5:28 am EST
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – In response to an article published by The New Republic, Ron Paul issued the following statement:
“The quotations in The New Republic article are not mine and do not represent what I believe or have ever believed. I have never uttered such words and denounce such small-minded thoughts.
“In fact, I have always agreed with Martin Luther King, Jr. that we should only be concerned with the content of a person's character, not the color of their skin. As I stated on the floor of the U.S. House on April 20, 1999: ‘I rise in great respect for the courage and high ideals of Rosa Parks who stood steadfastly for the rights of individuals against unjust laws and oppressive governmental policies.’
“This story is old news and has been rehashed for over a decade. It's once again being resurrected for obvious political reasons on the day of the New Hampshire primary.
“When I was out of Congress and practicing medicine full-time, a newsletter was published under my name that I did not edit. Several writers contributed to the product. For over a decade, I have publically taken moral responsibility for not paying closer attention to what went out under my name.”" |

You should know better than to throw any question upon Ron Paul on the internet. You will suffer. (waits for the libertarian flood to kick in hard) 1/8/2008 4:29:55 PM |

The actual newsletters are here:
http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=74978161-f730-43a2-91c3-de262573a129
From every account, it sounds like Paul was basically approached to use his name for the newsletters themselves, but otherwise most of them had little if any actual affiliation with him. More importantly, the writing style comes across as markedly different than Paul's - also calling into question the legitimacy of the accusation that Paul had somehow authored - or even authorized - these comments.
Basically, these look like the kind of newsletters produced on a typewriter and taken over to Kinko's - not exactly professional-grade work, here.
The author of the article seems to be attempting to get far more mileage out of the newsletters than is warranted as well - I mean, attacking Israel suddenly makes one a racist? Come on.
Again, though - if this is the best they can do, I'd hate to see what would happen if there were others with similar axes to grind against, say, Mitt Romney, Rudy Guiliani, or even Huckabee - I'm going to guess you may find actual skeletons in their closets...
Edit: Also, the author of the hit piece (because that's what this really is) outwardly admits he doesn't really believe that Paul is a homophobe/racist/whatnot here - but it's good propaganda to prop up his boy Guiliani here:

I mean, come on, if this doesn't scream "hit piece," then what does?

Wouldn't one assume that, over the years, Paul's democrat competitors for office would have already tried to smear him with this stuff? His status as a current congressmen attests to the success of those campaigns. 1/8/2008 6:28:42 PM |

From what I've heard, they have - in the '96 campaigns, etc. They just haven't gone very far. 1/8/2008 6:48:25 PM |
