Are they worth the money? I'm considering getting the DC17 because I can easily go to sams club and pick it up. Also, if something breaks like the belt, how easy is it to get a replacement?

my wife wanted a dyson for a while, and i refused to spend that much on a vacuum cleaner, but i finally relented about a year and a half ago. I believe we have the DC14. I must admit, It really does live up to the hype.

However, I remember reading that the patent for the cyclonic vacuum ran out, so now a lot of other manufacturers are doing the same thing as dyson, but selling them for less than half the cost. I would look in to those.

They're really nice, but if you're lucky, you can get a vacuum that's almost as good for a lot less money. (Dyson sued Hoover a few years ago for patent infringement.)

I read a consumer's report not too long ago and it is my understanding that Dysons are great vacuum cleaners but that there are other vacuums out there that are better and considerably less expensive. It may be worth picking up a copy before you make a purchase.

if you're used to an upright, stay w/ uprights.
if you're used to a canister, stay w/ the canisters.

most ppl aren't happy if they switch.

FYI Dyson's patent on the cyclone technology ran out in 2001 or so.

Unfortunately almost all of the competition is better now (as far as cyclone vaccuums go), but they are still pretty damn awesome.

got the animal one with the friends and family discount from somebody we knew for some reason

it was 50% of retail

the guy gave us a photocopied flyer and we called the number - has to be on the internet somewhere

i got the animal model at big lots almost 2 years ago

its awesome and i love it. i also use it to vacuum my car with the attachments.

i love that it has a washable, reusable filter and is bagless with a trigger i can easily empty into the trash without fussing with it.

picks up the cat hair very well.

only downside is that as a chick with longer hair, the loose hairs around the house tend to get really wound up on the spinny part with the bristles that kick dirt into the machine. you'll get this with any vacuum and its general 'maintenance' that i have to do to cut my accumulated hair off the spinny thing so it can continue to work efficiently to pick up dirt and hair on the carpet.

I got the animal model as well because it was purple. I need it to clean up after my birds and it does an awesome job (millet, feathers &c). The first time I used it in my parents' house it made the carpets look brand new. I got mine refurbished from amazon in 2006 it hasn't needed any maintenance. The only problem I had with it was when it lost suction but it turned out it had sucked up a huge two prong adapter what got stuck. :p

I sold these things and they were fucking incredible. Consumer reports rated them badly, but when compared to the vacs that were the highest the Dysons always won the customers over. The filter was one of the best parts, washable and with a lifetime warranty. I believe the filter also killed bacteria or captured it, something to that effect.

also the biggest feature that the dyson had that topped the competition was that it never lost suction, whether it was 99% full or you just emptied it. When you have a bagged vac or a bagless from another name brand they lose suction once they start filling up. Also the dyson is just very fucking simple to empty.

better in what way?

The Dysons still have the best design in terms of easy maintenance, getting to the edges while vacuuming, and storage and functionality of peripherals.

I almost bought a Dyson, but I have carpet in the 3 bedrooms and hardwoods everywhere else, and no pets, so I could not justify the price difference. I got a $139 hoover with a hepa filter and it pulls a surprisingly large amount of dust out of the air.

After much reluctance we bought dc17 animal after Christmas.. It is expensive, but man does it really suck up all the dog hair and dirt.. The instructions suck, but once you figure out the tools, it is good for vacuuming anything and vacuuming it really well. Love it

sheer power/suction. most of the new models also work until they are full with no loss in suction. they also have washable filters (which it's good to have an extra so you never have to wait for one to dry). emptying the waste is also easy on all of them (with the dyson, you have to close the bottom).

fit and finish on the dyson's are sometimes not so great.

Can anybody recommend some alternatives? I really don't want to pay $500 for a vacuum if there are ones that will do just a good of a job.

Just speaking in terms of suction power, the competition is a LOT better on carpet and other non-hardwood surfaces. As for everything else, I completely agree with you, which is why I'd still recommend the Dyson to people (especially on sale)

consumer reports verified that the claim of not losing suction is true. however, they also said that the suction was mediocre at it's best to begin with. a friend has a dyson and hates it. he also said that the suction is horrible.

you would have been impressed with a $70 bissell with hepa filtration too.

i compared a friends new cheaper bissell and dc14 dyson with my hoover and it was pretty much the same except for my washable filter and a lot more power.

Dyson's are a rip off. Yeah they may do a good job initially, but they have poor reliability and Consumer Reports testing shows that there are better vacuums for cheaper. Honestly check out Consumer Reports before you buy one of these.

lol...

We got a Dyson in '06 from cashing in duplicate wedding gifts. We have the red one with the car kit. That thing is pretty damn sweet. It pulls a ridiculous amount of crap up... then makes me think about all the random shit I've been walking, laying, whatever in before we got it...

If you're a current student, you can log onto the NCSU library website and pull up the consumer reports ratings on vacuum cleaners from october 2007, p 40-41. It's worth the read before dropping $300 on an appliance.

We have to pull out about a 30" piece of tubing out of the handle for it to come out. (if that makes any sense at all)

Basically, I'd like to just have the tubing end with as little of a connection as possible, so when you put tools on it you can really get into small spaces. As it stands, our flex tube ends with a long metal tube that's sometimes a pain to deal with, especially if you want to use it in the car.

Overall though, this thing kicks ass.

While we're on the topic of expensive vacuums, what about the Oreck models? The commercials always seemed really cheesy, but considering they have a large number of brick-and-mortar retail outlets, seems like it can't be a total scam...just curious. Not in the market right now.

My mom has an oreck. I love using it when I go to her house. I think it cost like $500 though....She hated the bagless kind, and I'm not really into the bagless kind anymore either.

I have an Oreck XL. It really does a great job and it is very lightweight. The aluminum handle flexes a little when you pick it up which makes it seem flimsy, but the body is very tough and it has a lot of sucking power. Mine doesn't have any attachments for vacuuming furniture or anything, but some of them do.

the way bobbydigital posts about his wife, you'd think she is a stay at home mom that has to ask his permission for everything

i base that off the post in this thread, and another post one time on how he has not touched laundry since he has been married

I've never touched laundry... ever. My mom worked at DH Hill when I was in school so she would pick-up and drop off my laundry and my wife does it now that we are married. I just fucking hate laundry. I cook dinner every night and do other shit... laundry is just something I don't do. Oh, and I never vacuum, but I always do the mopping.

consumer reports tends to grade the Dysons low.

that being said, I also grabbed one off of Woot and I LOVE it. I have a black lab that seems to have two purposes in life: fetching tennis balls and shedding. The Dyson picks up everything. It is stunning the first time you use it to because you probably think your old vac was doing a good job. It wasn't.

It truly lived up to every bit of the hype.

FYI, woot.com today has the Dyson for $219.

Thats far and away the lowest price I've ever seen on a Dyson upright. Hell, even less than the competition
