don't know if omega is still open or not....haven't lived in NC for over a decade...but if that small place has been able to stay open in the face of huge chains, more power to them!

I remember renting the movie Critters with my dad from a RaceTrac gas station in my hometown. They had a whole section of VHS tapes.

My hometown's also one of the few places I've actually seen a Super 10--it's owned by the same company that owns Rose's. Last I heard (when I had a friend working for the company), Super 10s were still using register tape to keep all their financial records ... that's old school.

Rose's was like a K-mart or a Kings. If I remember correctly. We would go there before there were Walmarts and Targets.

yep Omega is a chain, but i think local to NC. And I think the one on Battleground ave. in greensboro is still open, or at least it was around Christmas time.

I thought of a few more old school joints that were at least around in greensboro

SkyCity was the only dept. store in my home county growing up. Western Auto was another place I remember well. I used to love to go there with my dad and look at all their stuff.

Now what do we have? We have WalMart and AutoZone. Ughh....

^^^I remember Sally's well. Roy Rogers too...they still exist in places, just not in this area anymore. If you're ever headed up north on I-95 and have a jones for roast beef, there's a Roy Rogers at the "Maryland House" rest area.

Isn't the Omega in Crossroads still open? The one near Men's Wearhouse and Michael's?

^ There are still some Red & White stores. I know Smith's Red & White in Red Oak, NC is still open. They have some of the best cuts of meat and sausages that you'll find on the east coast.

Peaches Records & CDs? A local chain to the triad, I think, but there were several locations...

I don't think anyone's mentioned Record Bar yet. It was in Cameron Village, in what used to be the part under the parking deck, next to the Waldenbooks (also no longer there). Turtles music took over the retail space after Record Bar folded. I went there until I first heard of Best Buy (around 1996), and realized that $18 for a CD was ridonkulous. Best Buy pretty much ruined me for the small music stores.

Who remembers Aladdin's Castle Arcade in the Crabtree Pavilion? It was over in the corner near the hallway to the restrooms. My friend had his 10th birthday party there, his parents rented the whole place out for the evening.

i had some relatives that worked at record bar and they have all these awesome autographs of 80s people who used to come to town for concerts haha, like the go-gos etc.

Peebles is still around there is one in Roxboro

one of my favorite stores was little professor's bookstore in wilmington, i used to go there and buy books on a weekly basis and the people who worked there knew exactly what i was looking for, not sure if it was a chain or not.

someone asked about "nickles". It was actually Nichols. There was one in Wilson out on Hwy 301.

Whoever said "King's" gets an A+!!
