I've always wanted to either be a red fox or at least own one. The latter is my only realistic option For those of you who own a fox, what is it like raising a fox as a pet? Are they really dangerous if you do not domesticate them correctly, or is raising a fox like raising the hybrid of a cat/dog? 1/19/2008 8:43:51 PM |

They can be sorta tamed, but I do not know about the legality of owning them as a pet. I would imagine that it is not legal to own one inside certain city limits.
I grew up next door to a fox pen. It is an enclosed wooded area that houses a number of foxes that are used for the sole purpose of training hunting dogs. The foxes just have to leave a trail to give the dogs a good run in exchange for being kept fed, healthy, and safe. Even though these foxes were raised by people and with people, they're still wild animals. They're use to people and see people as a source of food, so you can walk up to them and even touch them. However, they're not really like dogs that you can pet, play with, and enjoy. You really cannot domesticate a wild animal. . .domestication is something that occurs after several generations of human dependence. Any fox kit that you try to raise as a pet will always be at risk of reverting back to it's natural instinctual state. And I would imagine that you may run into issues when it comes to the diseases that they can carry and if you can truly raise a healthy fox in a captive pet type of situation. 1/19/2008 10:47:20 PM |

You can own a fox outside of the corporate limits of raleigh. A friend of mine has a fox (among other exotic animals) off capital blvd just outside 540. He had to notify wake animal control and have an employee check out his property. I am 80% sure you have to keep it on a leash at all times when outside. Buying a fox that is already comfortable around people is $texas though. 1/20/2008 11:39:53 AM |

It is currently legal to own inherently dangerous animals in North Carolina. A fox is considered an inherently dangerous animal. Right now, however, it is left up to the governing local bodies. So you can own one, but why would you? 1/20/2008 2:18:53 PM |

All of what I am about to tell you is completely legal and true, I'm a wildlife officer, so I would know. all you have to do is put out a trap with a live bunny in it. Maybe break one of the bunnies legs so it squeals a lot. Two days later, there's your pet fox. And now that it is in a cage, it is completely domesticated and no threat to you. Feel free to ahead and start cuddling with your new partner in life. 1/20/2008 9:45:52 PM |

you only need a collection permit for nongame mammals, for reptiles and amphibs you can collect 5 and 25 of each species respectively w/o any licenses.1/21/2008 12:47:07 AM |

Here's a pic when he was 13 wks old (his fur is more red/orange now)

ah, a troll. That's much better. Most kids want to "be" an animal, but of course they usually grow out of it.
Penzoate, get a dog or a cat. Seems like you just want a fox just to say you own a fox, or a different, exotic animal. If you are willing to deal with their behavior, get a fennec. They are really the only foxes that can be kept as pets (I've never heard of those tame silver foxes before) They are wild animals, that have been tamed (not domesticated) for use as pets. Be sure to do lots of research before buying one, and you will probably have to pay a high price to obtain one. They may tear up your furniture, and dig a lot though. 2/9/2008 11:17:36 PM |
