Ok so the story I've heard is that when the Hurricanes came down here we had a really bad hurricane (can't remember the name of it) and it killed off a bunch of the helpless pigs on the pig farms in the eastern part of the state. As a tribute to those animals and represent the state of North Carolina and one of it's biggest economies, the Hurricanes created the pig mascot appropriately named Stormy. 1/19/2008 11:25:53 PM |

Unless it was a long time ago it would have had to have been Floyd.

^eh well the story i posted above was what i heard during a broadcast, but oh well.
nah killing animals isn't all that bad. i have to kill cute little guinea pigs at my job for the research that we do but i get over it, b/c i know that it is beneficial. i wouldn't just kill an animal just for the hell of it though. that'd be just wrong. you'd be surprised how the mind can adjust to things like that. humans killed their own food for most of our existence. why would that change now if we had to kill our own food? being hungry can and will make you do things that you've never thought you'd ever do, heck just look at those expedition crews that get stranded in the cold Himalayas and end up eating their dead comrades so that they can survive until a rescue crew can show up.

If everyone had to get all their food for themselves then there would be no advanced technology or culture.

Floyd was the bad flood. I am from Duplin County. We were the worst hit. Also where the most hog farms are. Half my family are working in hog or tobacco farms...and the rest in chicken houses. Mr. Murphy is a dear family friend. I was living with my Dad in Wilmington when it happened. I couldn't go back there for 3-4 weeks as highway 41, highway 53, and highway 50 were under 15-20 feet of water. Some people tell you they are from the "country"...with 1 stop light etc etc. This place has NO stop lights and 1 stop sign. 1/20/2008 3:57:30 AM |

Well, the team name came from Fran (1996) and from the link below, Stormy was created before Floyd (1999) hit. \

teams with non-anthropomorphic team names frequently have an unrelated mascot
the other hurricanes have a duck
stanford has a fucking tree (how this is better than a cardinal i will never know)
nba teams have random mascots 1/20/2008 4:02:07 PM |

^great examples: Nuggets (a lion?), spurs (a coyote?), suns (a gorilla?), sonics (a sasquatch? I mean, it's a local iconic figure, but c'mon), jazz (a man-bear-pig?) 1/20/2008 4:04:28 PM |

the phoenix suns gorilla makes the least sense of any non-anthropomorphic mascot

i'd say it makes a little sense as any, not less. I mean, what the fuck was the expos abortion of a mascot? or the san diego chicken?

Quote : | "Stormy the Ice Hog hid in a Zamboni machine that first night, hoping to surprise Carolina Hurricanes fans with a grand entrance.
The announcer introduced the new mascot before a crowd of about 7,000. But when the machine's tank was opened, no one emerged. All the audience could see were furry, twitching legs.
Some debut.
Phil Madren, the guy hired to wear the suit, apparently asphyxiated on carbon dioxide vapors seeping from a bucket of dry ice inside the tank.
Madren survived the 1997 incident, later settling a lawsuit against the team in 2001 for an undisclosed sum." |

eh, the expos was just...some....thing. so, it didn't really have to make sense. it wasn't an animal or anything.
but a gorilla? no idea how you can possibly tie that to phoenix.
san diego chicken...yeah, as far as i know, it also makes no sense.
other mascots you can sort of tie to the area...sasquatch in the pacific northwest, mountain lions in the rockies, coyotes in central texas plains....

I don't see how that could happen without Wilmington to Morehead City being completely underwater. 15-20 feet is a lot. 9/21/2017 1:21:13 PM |
