Do you know if they allow simultaneous connections from multiple ips? UNS does and they're spooling up to 400 days retention now. So far they're at 350+. It's still $40 for 3 months. I tried Astraweb for a couple of months, but I wasn't too happy with them so I switched back to UNS. I might switch to those guys for a while when my current 3 months expire.

only thing i don't like about giganews. my buddy has a subscription just in case he ever needs anything but never uses it, but for 25/mo they should do simul.

Really? That's the only thing? The fact that they're 2-2.5 times as expensive as the other guys doesn't bother you? I know you've said a couple of times that you're not the one paying, but seriously, if that guy really is your buddy, you'd be doing him a favor by letting him know he can receive better service for far cheaper with several other companies. Now that pretty much so everyone else is going to 400 day retention and has 20 connections with SSL and 99.9% retention rate, why would anyone go with something so expensive? Does he hate money?

Yeah you're not without point by any means, but the retention was a large factor for a while there and now honestly this is the first I've even seen anyone come close to giganews. When I signed up you had three majors -- easynews, giganews, and I forget the third.

I actually did the UNS thing for a while and unfortunately it was during that period where you would get those random ass errors at least once a day and it was pretty annoying. Giganews has been completely solid for two years now, but both he and I have paid a premium for it. Definitely emphasis on the latter.

After your indirect guilt trip, I'll give the others another look. I believe I only had 3 meg when I was on UNS, but giganews has absolutely no problem maxing a 12meg pipe 24/7.

I used to take my laptop into work and download from UNS at 4-5 MB (yes that's MByte) a second. Unless you live in Wilson and have that 100Mb crazy ass internet, I doubt you're not gonna be able to max out almost any residential connection you can find.

My latest 3 months with UNS just expired and I was looking to see if someone else had a better deal. I ended up finding this page, which lets you sign up for $10 a month or $95 if you sign up for a full year. One year seems like a bit of a commitment, but I've already been a UNS customer for over 5 years now, so I figured I'd give it a shot. 600 days of retention, 20 concurrent connections and free SSL for less than $8/month seems too good to pass up.

Wow yeah that's a pretty killer deal. I don't know why i'd need 20 connections but I do hand them out to friends for beer sometimes.

so, I'm (once again) looking at newsgroups. I'm going to hop on that $10 UNS deal. What else do you guys recommend? NewsLeecher still the program to use or something else? Signed up for Newzbin also...

*edit* Anybody want me to put them down as the referral ID before I submit this on UNS?

My number is 305732 if you feel like putting it in.

And yeah, I still use newsleecher. There may be better options out there now, I haven't looked in years, I tend to stick with what I know. They keep updating it fairly often, I can't complain. You can now search for 800 days with it. No need for it and newzbin, imo.

Also, just signed up for Newzbin since it's open registration right now and I know they used to be kinda tight about it. I haven't paid anything yet so...

Really? Looking at the alt.binz page, it apparently hasn't been updated since 2007. Am I missing something?

*edit* and I've already maxed out my ~16 Mb/s connection (unlike torrents) and haven't had my connection reset 10x while trying to surf... Awesome. Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah, I did try alt.binz once and found it to be complete shit. At least when compared to something else that didn't happen to be complete shit.

I used newsleecher for a year, but to me it's not really even worth the 25 bucks. I'd just as easily use grabit if I don't feel like configuring alt.binz. Then again I never have been one for searching binaries from my newsreader. NZBs are out there for a reason.

The only one I've used is Unison - http://www.panic.com/unison/

But most of my newsgroup stuff I did was on a Windows machine

The general consensus seems to be that there is no good client for OSX.

That being said, I use Unison as well when the need arises. I used to use a Windows VM and Newsleecher, but when my Windows 7 trial expired I never bothered to reinstall. I keep a Windows box around for pretty much so the sole purpose of using newsleecher on it.

SABnzb is the end all be all if you have the time and patience to configure it properly.

I guess basically because it's fully automated and extremely portable. And it's an http interface so you can control it remotely if you want.

yeah you can have sab monitor a folder for nzbs or have it watch an rss feed for your tv show and then it will automatically grab the nzb itself. I had a script that would automatically queue the nzb with sab, but of course that was windows, no idea how streamlined you can get it on osx/unix.

Alright, so SABnzb is a much better solution than Unison, for sure. I don't think I'll be replacing newsleecher with it, but I will use it on my macbook when I'm on the road and need to download something. I'm not sure I like it running as a service instead of just a program I can quit, but no biggie. And I wish that when I double clicked on the SABnzb program for the first time, and it opened up a tab in my browser for configuration, it actually would have brought the browser to the forefront. I just assumed that it wasn't doing anything and actually deleted it. It wasn't until 5 minutes later after I saw the new tab in my browser, that I figured out what was going on. That could have been a little more clear.

Otherwise, yeah, looks alright.

There are a few scripts/addons that help it out, but yeah there are definitely some annoyances.

I found that the RSS feeds never updated fast enough to prevent me from manually refreshing and adding the torrent or nzb as soon as it's uploaded.

yeah, i was using newzbin for a while, but revtt torrents always were uploaded a solid 15-20 minutes before anything ever showed up on newzbin and it seems that's still the case with nzbmatrix. I usually set it up in the event im not around to queue it, but rarely took advantage. I'll probably try again soon considering I missed downloading all of last night's eps.

I've gone back to downloading headers on a nightly basis for a.b.multimedia.

I enjoy seeing what's out there and look at it as the equivalent of channel surfing. I don't know how long it takes for search engines/RSS feeds to pick up on new posts but last night I noticed that several of the shows that air from 10-11pm were fully uploaded and propagated to the server at 11:01pm. I honestly don't know how they get everything done so quickly, it's amazing.

i use rss feeds on my popcorn hour for shows that i download consistently

i often find myself wanting to watch it immediately though and it's set to only check the rss feeds once every hour so i download manually and then have it skip the rss feed sometimes

Yeah i'm using RSS feeds from nzbmatrix.com right now. I had to custom make them though. Only trouble I'm running into is how to get the rss feed to only pick up one release of each episode instead of all of them.

That makes me miss the download speeds at my last job. Except for my work computer was so old and slow that it would download for ~8-10 MBps for a minute or two, fill up the HDD buffer, and then drop to 0 for 10-15 seconds until things would get caught up. It was good enough to average 6-7 MBps, but I always wondered what kind of speeds I would get on a computer that wasn't a giant piece of shit.
