I'm in due to massive asthma attack that did not respond to abuterol/zopenex nebulizer, advair, pure oxygen, pregnesone (oral and shots), and continuous steriod drip. Came in at 10 pm yesterday and they say the minimum I'll be released by is Monday. Looks like I'll be using my entire years worth of sick leave by Feb 5.

I work in a doctors office that allows 1 week sick leave a year, but I already took Wed-Friday off due to being sick which turned into the asthma attack. Maybe this falls under "short term disability"...ha, I wish

And to be a bit sappy, being in the hospital for the first time since I was 7 and having my family live 800 miles away sorta gets really sad. There's just something about your mom being there saying "it's ok"....

My mom was in the hospital after surgery for a MASSIVE hernia in December. I stayed with her as much as I could, with my dad or bf there when I couldn't be, and I am so glad I did.

She was really heavily medicated, and I was sitting there online while she slept, and her breathing began to change. For the first two breaths, I thought she was snoring. As I watched, she began to take on a bluish tinge. Until then, she had no oxygen monitor on her, so who knows when they'd have realized something was going on.

yeah pardon the spellng. and yeah, they have me on solu-medrol every 8 hours as of right now. My body just doesnt want to respond to anything. And that includes sleep, so I've taken the second Ambien of my life and am fading fast...Wish me luck that no one comes to wake me up in the next 7 hours or so...

I've been with both my mother, and her best friend (long ago...she had MS, and was always in and out of the hospital - sometimes short stays, sometimes weeks on end)

And except for two nurses, I have loved everyone. Hell, one of my mom's nurses saw me looking at rings, and says 'oh! one of our other nurses is getting engaged soon! You two should talk!' and sent her in. And then we got all girly looking at rings, and then she started asking about my firefox plug-ins and laptop case

It could have definitely been worse.

i went to rex once, but only because the student health center was closed. sitting around in a waiting room for hours on a friday evening with a very minor injury gets really old really quick.

yeah, good luck with that... if you don't get bothered for 7+ hours in the hospital, everyone has either quit their job or died.

i've never been admitted to rex, but if you add up all the times i've spent about three months total in wake med over the past year and half. i'd say 1/4-1/3 of the floor staff was good, the rest suck. that's either because they obviously don't know what they're doing, or they're forgetful, or just downright rude/mean. some of them like to play doctor too and try to control things when they have no business. for example, i had a nurse last week tell me i didn't need to have my ambien since i was also taking dilaudid, oxycontin and percocet. when it's plainly ordered in my chart for me to have all of the above. she stood me down about it, and i had to get the charge nurse involved to resolve it.

i know they have to deal with people that are a royal pain in the ass, but i don't consider myself a demanding patient. i only ask for something maybe once or twice a day, and even then it's usually just a drink or something. i eat whatever they decide to bring me, i take care of my own bathing and other personal needs (unless i have a catheter), etc. i know it's a hard, understaffed, and under payed job so a lot of the blame should fall further up the chain i guess.

i have received excellent care from my doctors, surgeons, etc. though.

Yeah, I wish I had realized Wake Forest had wireless internet in the hospital when I stayed in December. But, really, I was only there for 2.5 days and most of the first day I was uncomfortable as shit.

But wireless internet in hospitals is awesome.

We were at Rex right before Christmas for our delivery. Though we were at the Family Birth Center.

The staff were all excellent. The first night was all right, a huge quiet room in the corner. The second night was horrible. We were moved to 3rd East, into a room the size of a dorm right beside the nurses station.

I think we slept for an hour that night.

^yeah, the birthing center there is definitely sweet from what i've seen. super nice rooms, all the staff i've been in contact with are awesome, etc. i don't have any first hand experience, but i've spent a lot of time there with siblings and friends that were having kids.

I had a wonderful experience at Rex Hospital while I was there having my son. I spent next to no time at all in the delivery room because I had a scheduled C-section. The next 4 days in recovery were awesome. I spent it in a brand new Mom and baby room that had just opened the previous month. The room was ENORMOUS, had a flat panel TV, and the nursing staff was unbelievable.

HOWEVER, I was not so thrilled about the staff in the nursery. My son is currently at Duke and has been diagnosed with DiGeorge Syndrome. He has a list of problems longer than he is and none of them were caught during his time in their care. I somehow do not believe that he didn't have a single seizure until the day that he came home...

You were in 3-Women's, the new wing at Rex. We asked to be moved in there but it was full.

I am not sure but it seems most women who had a C-section get moved there after delivery.

The original rooms on the 2nd floor in the Family Birth Center are already being renovated I believe. They were already marked as overflow when we had our daughter in December.
