Quick question, did you shower or bath with your kids and at what age did you stop or feel it was too old? We got two boys, so obviously mom doesn't ever do this. I don't really care either way to be honest, they don't bother me in the shower (unlike us they aren't preoccupied with sex or genitalia), but at what point does it become inappropriate? 2/3/2008 11:12:04 AM |

around 6 or 7 is when it might become a bit of a problem. i'm not a parent, but i used to be a nanny and i've found that around that age is when they start asking questions and stuff like that. 2/3/2008 1:44:30 PM |

Yea thats kinda what I thought. He used to be afraid to shower on his own, but with his brother now, that is pretty much over, as he has somebody else to play with in the tub. Maybe once every couple months in the last year have I had to do this. Just curious if any other parents on here had kids old enough that this had become an issue or something they had thought about. I'm pretty sure that it ain't going to happen again, but 2/3/2008 1:50:21 PM |

yup. i was just going to say six. i have an eight year old daughter and i stopped getting undressed around her when she was six b/c she, ummmmm, started staring at it. it freaked me out.
my oldest son is five and my wife will still showers with him every once in a while. he's still too young to notice anything. although, we were in a busy public bathroom one time at the mall and he asked really loud why my pee pee had a mustache that was a little embarrassing! 2/3/2008 2:06:53 PM |

My little one is almost a month old, so it's not really an issue right now. However, my brother and I probably took showers on occasion with my mother until we were 6 or 7. We also regularly bathed with one another until about the same age. And I believe we were allowed to bathe with members of the same gender (step-siblings/friends) until we became uncomfortable with it ourselves. 2/3/2008 3:11:00 PM |

I think when they're old enough to notice and be embarrassed, then it's time to stop. While it's embarrassing for me when my son says things like, "Mommy has no penis," being matter-of-fact about differences and setting limits (that's a private area, we only touch our own, etc.) is healthy.
Whether that fits with a specific age is another question. I have friends who think it's creepy to have a child of any age in the shower with you, and an in-law who will sit in the bathroom and chat with his mom while she's bathing (he's 29). So it's in large part what you and the kids are comfortable with. 2/3/2008 3:11:29 PM |

^Agreed.
My brother and I are both in our 20s and it still doesn't phase either of us to invade one another's personal space. I've run into the bathroom while he's taking a shower to do something and he's popped into the bathroom to grab something he needs while I'm using the bathroom. Then again, I grew up in a household where no one bothered to ever close doors or take special care to be fully dressed at all times. 2/3/2008 3:15:35 PM |

On the same topic, the first time my son noticed that something was 'missing', the conversation went roughly as follows: "Mommy has no penis" "You're right, sweetie "Only Daddy & B. have penises" "You're right, boys have penises" ...now I should have just dropped it, but thought it would be a teaching moment, so I continued... "Girls don't have penises, girls have vaginas instead" to which he enthusiastically responded, "Vaginas are fun!"
It was everything I could do to not roll on the floor. 2/3/2008 3:20:56 PM |

I have two boys. One is three and a half, the other is 16 months old. My wife recently stopped taking showers with our oldest since he has noticed that daddy has a peepee like him and mommy doesn't. And someone has recently taught him about girls having vaginas. My wife still showers with the youngest at times.
oh, and I don't bath with either of them since they both start poking at mine...

so can he see her naked? if so, that's horribly sick.
even if he has no visual contact, it is still repulsive.

This reminds me of a hilarious story one of my co-workers told. His son busted in on his wife in the bathroom and saw her "fine china." That's a pretty appropriate name the more I think about it. 2/5/2008 6:05:53 PM |

Stop when they're pretty young, but make sure that they get a good look at you beforehand. Then he'll go through life thinking that his dad's cock is as big as his forearm and he'll never backtalk. 2/5/2008 7:53:55 PM |
