i am honestly surprised that this doesn't happen more often, at least bad cuts from skates (not necessarily the neck), than it does. esp. with all of the pile-ups that happen around the nets and things like that

in that instance the guy didnt get up and try to get off the ice immediately though

they had stablized the goalie and awaited a stretcher to get to him as opposed to what happened last night

I thought the same exact thing because when I saw the vid I was working the booth during a beer league game.

I just can't bring myself to wear a neck guard, though. It makes me feel constricted and then I get claustrophobic.

It was just luck. Malarchuk wasn't stabilized, he just happened to stick his finger right into the hole in his jugular and stop the bleeding. The paramedics were at his end of the rink and immediately told him not to move his hand...if they'd been at the other end of the rink and he had pulled it out before they arrived, he would've bled out in the crease.

It was his corroded artery, which is a much bigger deal than the jugular vein.

^^ general trend: people will only wear the gear they are required to. Less gear means lighter means faster means more comfortable you might make a play you wouldnt otherwise have made.

given my situation, i'd rather have a little extra protection and not have to fear that injury. then again, i'm not a professional hockey player.

to a degree, but throat protectors are typically pretty cumbersome. Great for a goalie, but for someone who has to look over their shoulder more often, throat protectors can get in the way

yeah, i definitely agree there. i would only wear one in goal too, i thought that's what we were talking about.

there is the opportunity for that kind of injury to happen to anyone, but to your point, if i were anywhere on the ice other than in goal, a neck guard would be way too prohibitive.

I know a few hundred adult hockey players, and only one skater wears a neck guard. I know two goalies who wear the type that would actually prevent a skate cut, but most (including me) only wear the lexan type that protects against pucks.

A long time ago, I was covering a puck and a stick got lifted up under my neck and cut me. It was nothing like a skate cut, but I tried wearing a neck guard for a little while and couldn't deal with it. My dad is still pissed that I refuse to wear one; he called me to complain about it again immediately after the Zednik thing happened.

Other than maybe a dozen goalies, I don't know anyone in the NHL who wears a cut-proof neck guard.

She said hospital officials have talked to Zednik about seeking psychiatric counseling once he returns to Florida. "I'm not an expert.
