I'm still eligible for student discounts and Adobe has Premiere Pro CS3 available for ~$350.
Any other software anyone strongly recommends?
The majority of videos I need to produce will be using graphics and short (< 2-3 minute) video clips.
Windows Movie Maker and Sonic's DVD burner (which all came with my computer) just aren't cutting it anymore.
Thanks 2/13/2008 10:26:51 PM |

If you and a student at NCSU and don't want go the illegal route and you aren't willing to pay the $350 ... go to NCSU's Digital Media Lab http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/dml/ (directly above the new Learning Commons. 2/13/2008 11:13:26 PM |

I've never used Final Cut Pro, however I really like Premiere Pro and the latest one is ridiculous good.

^^ what does it add that Premiere doesn't?
Cost? Requirements?
Also, I don't even know if this is possible on ANY of these programs, but... one of my main projects is to take a 20 minute video and have it loop continuously on DVD (so that someone doesn't have to hit play every 20 minutes). Best way to do this? 2/14/2008 1:20:10 AM |

Make the video on Premiere, then loop it on a DVD editing program.
For those recommending Avid, it's expensive and usually wants to run on it's own proprietary hardware anyway. 2/14/2008 9:33:09 AM |

you could get Final Cut Express or Adobe Premiere Elements if you want to go a slightly cheaper route 2/14/2008 9:40:43 AM |

seriously just go to the advanced media lab on campus if you can.
I actually would recommend getting the Adobe Production Suite, or getting Adobe After Effects instead of Premiere if you just want one product. AE can do post-production and basic editing, Premiere is JUST an editor (although an extremely good one).
Premiere cant really be compared to Final Cut Pro. FCP is really equivalent to After Effects AND Premiere AND Encore. In the production suite you get Premiere, After Effects ,Encore, Soundbooth, Illustrator and Photoshop 2/14/2008 7:28:46 PM |

^I sense a tid bit of bias towards adobe. Could be misleading ya know. 2/14/2008 10:07:02 PM |

^Actually I like Final Cut Pro waaaay better than the Adobe suite.
BUT, it's a lot cheaper for a student to go with a Windows machine + Production Suite, and it's not that Adobe can't do what FCP can, it just takes more learning and more work.
Although I do have to admit, as Adobe keeps moving forward, for non-traditional video (web, mobile, streaming), they are kicking FCP's ass. 2/14/2008 11:03:49 PM |
