i know for a fact that i've asked this question before (though maybe not as its own thread), though it's been a while and now that vista's been out for a year, and memory prices are low, i thought i'd ask again

okay, so the desktop's running 32-bit xp with a 2.2ghz c2d (2mb cache) and 4gb of RAM (2x2gb) using the 3gb switch (so only about 3.25gb shows up)...is there any point in a page file? i've tried to max out memory usage, and the most i've gotten it up to is 50%

the laptop's running 32-bit vista with a 2.5ghz c2d (6mb cache) and 4gb of RAM (2x2gb) using the 3gb switch as well...i can't max out memory usage no matter what i do...why bother with a page file at all? especially in terms of a laptop, wouldn't i get better performance (albeit small) if i minimize disk read/writes by eliminating the page file?

also, are there any programs that REQUIRE a page file? for some reason, i thought that photoshop might, but i don't recall

when i get around to it, i'm planning on installing ubuntu on the laptop and running a dual-boot...with 4gb of RAM, would i need a swap file?
