Quote : | "Red Paint Splashed on UNC's Old Well Before Tonight's Game Against NC State
It has become a free-for-all in the Triangle (the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area). Not only have Duke and North Carolina been going through a war of words from the coaches ... but NC State just threw a haymaker. I guess they are a little bent that everyone is forgetting that the Wolfpack actually host the Tar Heels tonight, and someone decided to send a calling card:
UNC-Chapel Hill police want to find out who splashed a cup of red paint onto the iconic Old Well early this morning. The paint was splashed on one of the white columns supporting the Old Well roof. It was repainted white about 7:30 a.m.
Graffiti chalked on the brick sidewalk surrounding the landmark were also removed, and wet red bricks were the only remnant of the vandalism.
Existence, noted. A few years ago, police believe they caught a State fan/student trying to stencil a Wolfpack logo on the columns.
People tend to forget that NC State-UNC is a pretty darn heated rivalry too. What makes it worse is the fact that State has that "baby brother" view thrust upon them since it is always Duke and Carolina discussed. They even have "go to hell, Carolina" in their fight song.
The unranked Wolfpack host the #3 Tar Heels tonight in Raleigh." |

Carolina has "go to hell state" twice in their fight song (maybe more, not sure)
I think state-carolina is an older, more heated rivalry among students than duke-carolina.
Duke-Carolina has just been better games amongst better basketball schools the past 20-25 years than state-carolina, so of course the media is going to hype it up more
But when it comes down to one stereotype of students hating another stereotype of students more, its state-carolina, not duke-carolina
People at carolina know more people that go to or went to state than they do duke
Carolina/state people can respect a loss from duke more than they can from each other2/20/2008 2:03:37 PM |

an older friend (old guy) of mine claims ESPN is to blame for the Duke-UNC rivalry. Sure, plenty of great games and the two teams have done their job... but he claims that when ESPN turned up the heat on college hoops, it was right at the time of State's collapse and the Coach K era.
State/Carolina is also a well-rounded rivalry. It's not just basketball.
State/Carolina is the whole ag/fags, Football, basketball, baseball, etc...

it was also that ESPN wasnt much of the worldwide leader in anything when the rivalry was bigger. Duke was not duke until coach K. We fell off the face of the earth, Duke/ESPN exploded and so after 2+ generations no one remembers what it used to be like. If ESPN tells you something enough, you start to believe it 2/20/2008 2:54:19 PM |

bet I know more than you...
its the people that JUST think the Duke/Carolina rivalry started because of ESPN that dont know their shit... tell Vic Bubas that Duke/Carolina wasnt a rivalry before 1980, tell Art Heyman and Larry Brown... fucking idiots. Dont even know the history of your own fucking conference. Was State/Carolina huge? sure. As big as Duke/Carolina? sure. But saying Duke/Carolina is JUST because of ESPN shows you dont know shit. I would say both were equal for years and years, Duke declined in the 70s which lead to Carolina/State being the bigger rivalry during the 70s until Coach K showed up and revitalized Duke then Duke/Carolina moved back on top

100% right... SO many State fans have the little man complex, its so damn annoying.

^^^^ good knowledge. I bet there are only a handful of people on here who actually know ACC history. I didn't know it when I started school being from CT but read all of those books (Four Corners/march to madness/etc) and got interested in it.
Quote : | "carolina/state people can respect a loss from duke more than they can from each other" |
Actually I think that's partially true at least. Carolina fans act like Duke is their biggest rival and they are, but it really, really gets to them when they lose to us because they feel that they are just naturally superior to State and winning is their birthright. At least with Duke the program is so elite that a loss at times is expected..

Not really relevant to this thread but a post above reminded me of it.
I met Art Heyman in NYC at his bar (I randomly went to it to watch a State game a few years back when I was in town with my g/f) and he was awesome. He is a reputation for being a dick but I sat there and talked ACC hoops with the guy for like 30 minutes while he was running the bar (what bar owner actually runs the bar? seriously...) and he couldn't have been nicer. 2/20/2008 5:05:39 PM |

I've heard the same thing about Heyman. He was a feisty fucking player back in the day, though.
^^ I think his bar is called Tracy's or something.
Speaking of old ACC basketball: I usually attend the ACC Tournament, but I might've liked this even more (another Case idea). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Classic_%28Basketball_Tournament%29

Crappill Hill rolls off my tongue, I have to think to say Chapel Hill
Duke v UNC is more like bickering among Protestants and Catholics
