or
1. go to seagrove pottery in cameron village,
2. pick out a nice (masculine coloured) bowl with a lid
3. get some candy (m&ms or hot tamales) to put inside
4. thoughtful gift for ~$40

A few years ago several classicists, people who study ancient greek/roman history/language/mythology etc, at ncsu pitched in to get a nice plaque. It was as a thank you for holding so many independent studies at very early hours that she was not paid for. I think it either had some quote on there or something they wrote up in latin or greek.

I had her for GRK 310 (mythology) and she was a wonderful professor.

All this to say, perhaps instead of a generic gift, you should get something specifically related to your advisor's field of study.

Plant seems like a good idea. If it isn't your thing, perhaps a nice leather ledger type notebook thing. I can't think of what the official name is but it is almost like a Trapper Keeper, but more professional.
